President's visit strands Iowa brass

Veteran Urbandale head baseball coach Denny Barton has been coordinating the Iowa-Japan high school baseball exchange program since it was started in 1990.

He’s taken Iowa AAU teams to Iowa’s sister state of Yamanashi a half-dozen times, and he’s served as host for every visiting team that’s come to Iowa.

In all those years and over all those miles, he said, there’s been nary a hitch in the East-meets-West matchup.

Until Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids, that is, when he and Urbandale assistant Fritz Keeling were stranded at the Kennedy baseball diamond.

The top stories of 2011-12 - Nos. 6-10

Last year at this time, I unveiled my first annual list of the top Metro stories of the year. It was so much fun I thought I would take another crack at it as we enter the fall and the dawn of a brand new athletic year.

I will say right off the top that the top six stories of the year were very tough, in my opinion, to put in order of importance. Hopefully, it will inspire some good dialogue. I will start off this week counting down from 10 to six. We'll take a week off next week to preview the Metro football season, then come back in two weeks with the top five stories.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to be out until late September. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Thursday and went 1-for-4 in the Loons' 6-2 loss to Bowling Green. Year to date -- BA - .264, AB - 455, R - 63, H - 121, RBI - 62, 2B - 30, 3B - 8, HR - 6, SB - 16.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Thursday and went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Vancouver's 5-0 loss to Everett. Vancouver totals -- BA - .215, AB - 191, R - 25, H - 41, RBI - 27, 2B - 12, 3B - 2, HR - 4, SB - 2.
