Cougars win Linn-Mar golf tourney

The battle for 42nd Street NE between the Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints has hit the links.

Xavier struck the first blow last Thursday when it trimmed Kennedy by nine shots for top honors at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet at Bunker Hill in Dubuque.

The Cougars struck back Monday by trimming the Saints by six strokes at the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge.

This could go on all season.

Metro all-stars excited to face Japan

To a man, the Metro all-stars who will face Japan in a special baseball game Tuesday night are excited and curious.

They're excited to play in an all-star game with their friends from the Metro schools and they're curious to see how the team from Yamanashi, Japan plays the game.

The Japan-Metro All-Star Classic will be held at Kennedy High School Tuesday night, with the pre-game ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the gate.

J-Hawk fundraiser deemed a success

Lou King told me years ago that the best way to raise money – for any cause – was to hold a golf tournament.

King should know. For years, he was senior vice president of Amana Refrigeration and one of the men responsible for putting together the Amana VIP golf tournament. It was held for years at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City and regularly attracted top touring pros, U.S. Presidents, actors, coaches and other luminaries.

I was told at one time Amana didn’t necessarily make a ton of dough off the golf tournament, but advertising of touring pros who wore the Amana cap and the publicity the tournament received were invaluable.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to be out until late September. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Monday and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the Loons' 5-4 win over Lansing. Year to date -- BA - .266, AB - 451, R - 63, H - 120, RBI - 62, 2B - 30, 3B - 8, HR - 6, SB - 16.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Monday and went 1-for-4 in Vancouver's 6-0 win over Yakima. Vancouver totals -- BA - .212, AB - 184, R - 24, H - 39, RBI - 26, 2B - 12, 3B - 2, HR - 4, SB - 2.

The whistle blew in practice Friday and Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth barked at his team for doing something wrong.

The wrong play? No.

The wrong scheme? No.

The wrong way to break the huddle? No, that wasn't it either.
