Marion gridders looking to bounce back

Some of the preseason high school football polls have been released and the Marion Indians don't see their names anywhere.

That's OK with Coach Tony Perkins, who knows how these things work, but it's not OK with some of his players.

"That's huge motivation," senior Ethan Herren remarked. "Everybody is doubting us now. All these preseason rankings ... Marion is nothing now. We're nothing to nobody.

"We have a lot to prove."

Saints will scratch where it itches

The last time Reggie Schulte played a football game for the Xavier Saints, he completed 23 of 27 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-31 loss to Pleasant Valley in the Class 4A playoffs.

The kid can throw, but his father -- Xavier Coach Duane Schulte -- is not ready to give Reggie the keys to the kingdown and make it "Air Schulte" this year.

"I always liked what Hayden Fry used to say," Coach Schulte remarked Tuesday. "Scratch where it itches and take what the defense gives you.

"We'll do what we have to do to try and get first downs. I think that's the bottom line."

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to miss eight weeks. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Sunday and went 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored in the Loons' 10-6 loss to Lansing. Year to date -- BA - .266, AB - 447, R - 62, H - 119, RBI - 61, 2B - 30, 3B - 8, HR - 5, SB - 16.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Vancouver's 6-3 win over Yakima. Vancouver totals -- BA - .211, AB - 180, R - 24, H - 38, RBI - 26, 2B - 12, 3B - 2, HR - 4, SB - 2.

   

Sagers leads Saints to MVC golf title

DUBUQUE - Xavier golf coach Tim O'Brien strolled into the high school gym Wednesday in search of history.

He knew the Saints had won a Mississippi Valley Conference title a few years ago and wanted to refresh his memory, just in case his team finished in first place again this year.

Hayden leads Metro parade on IHSBCA all-state teams

Alex Hayden capped a brilliant season for the Kennedy High School baseball team Thursday by being named to the 2012 All-State "Super Team" by the Iowa High chool Baseball Coaches Association.

Eleven Metro players were selected for the all-state teams by the IHSBCA, a testament to the talent in the Metro area this year.

Hayden was named as a utility player on the "Super Team," an elite unit that honors the top 15 players in the state, regardless of classification. He compiled an 11-2 record on the mound with a 0.99 ERA, hit .386 with 28 RBIs and excelled at second base.

Cody Bell of Kennedy, Josh Jahlas of Kennedy, Jason Velvick of Prairie, Brennan Hammer of Prairie and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar were named first team all-state in Class 4A.

Bell hit .466 this season with five homers and 45 RBIs and was selected as a first baseman. Jahlas hit .451 with 57 runs scored and 38 RBIs. He was named as an outfielder.
