Marion drops twinbill to Williamsburg

Marion High School fans can sit on a gentle slope that overlooks the baseball and softball fields at the Les Hipple Sports Complex and watch the action on both diamonds if they want.

They probably enjoyed what they saw on the softball field a lot more than what they saw on the baseball field Thursday night.

The Marion baseball team dropped a Wamac Conference doubleheader to Williamsburg, 9-7 and 7-6, as Marion pitchers walked 13 batters and hit two others.

J-Hawks pound Lions in twinbill

Cedar Rapids Jefferson scored early and often in a doubleheader drubbing of Linn-Mar on Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball matchup at the Linn-Mar field.

Kenna Fry hit two home runs in the first game and Hannah McInerney matched that effort, one being a grand slam, in the nightcap as the fifth-ranked J-Hawks swept, 14-2 and 14-4.

“She can never let me be the star,” joked Fry, who had five hits and four RBIs as part of Jefferson's 33-hit barrage.

“I’m really OK with her being the star,” countered McInerney. “I’m pretty proud of everybody tonight.”

That isn’t the only kind of serving he’s famous for.

“Tennis and eating always went hand in hand with Randy,” adds Dan Breitbach, another old playing pal. “He was a master at both.

Lizarraga is special weapon for Cougars

Kennedy catcher Jimmy "Chico" Lizarraga has a special bond with the pitching staff for the top-ranked Cougars.

After all, he's been catching most of them since they were eight years old and playing at a high level for the Junior Cougars.

"I really don't trust anyone else," said Nick Appleget, one of the starting pitchers at Kennedy. "I mean, I can throw with anyone else back there, but I look for Jimmy. He's the best catcher I know."

J-Hawks sweep previously unbeaten Rams

DUBUQUE -- Jefferson’s senior dominated lineup led the way as the fifth ranked J-Hawks knocked No. 10 Dubuque Senior from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-1, 9-3 doubleheader sweep Tuesday night.

Senior Hannah Petersen struck out 10 and scattered four hits in the opener. Nearly 75 percent of her pitches were strikes.

Seniors Rachel Sedlacek and Kenna Fry each scored in the J-Hawk fifth with Fry also knocking in a key run.
