Metro Sports Report

Streakin'

First off, congratulations to both our Metro area's state champions that were crowned last Saturday at the girls state soccer championships in Muscatine.

Kennedy had an improbable path to its Class 3A title, knocking off the top three rated teams on three successive days, including previously unbeaten and top-ranked Ankeny 2-1 in the final.

And Xavier made it seven straight banners as it upended North Scott 3-1 in the 2A championship game.

Can Zach join Jack?

Only two Iowans have won major golf championships. One will be at Olympic Club in San Francisco this week, while the other one was there 57 years ago pulling perhaps the greatest upset in sports history.

Zach Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Jack Fleck or Davenport have met one another a couple times and share a kinship in knowing they are the only Iowans to win one of golf’s four major championships.

Zach will be seeking this week to add a U.S. Open title to his 2007 Masters crown. Johnson has won seven events and banked millions of dollars since that win in April, rising to become one of the world’s best players.

Lions survive J-Hawks; streak to 8

It was a lot harder than the first time around, but Linn-Mar still managed to handle the Jefferson baseball team Monday night.

Twice.

Linn-Mar scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the opener, 5-4, then tallied three times over the fifth and six innings for a 5-3 win in the nightcap at the Jefferson field.

The pair of wins stretched Linn-Mar's winning streak to eight games.

Jahlas, Ambrosy keep Kennedy's plate full

Josh Jahlas and Logan Ambrosy are terrific table setters for Kennedy High School, but it has nothing to do with knives, forks or silverware.

Jahlas and Ambrosy set the table for the top-ranked Cougars by getting on base at the top of the lineup and scoring runs, and they've been doing it very well.

The dynamic duo went a combined 6-for-7 Monday night and scored nine runs as Kennedy swept a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill from Dubuque Hempstead, 11-0 and 9-0, at the Kennedy field on a gorgeous night for baseball.
