Greve tosses 2-hitter as Lions bash Warriors

Any high school pitcher loves run support from his offensive buddies. Linn-Mar provided Nate Greve with a mountain of it Friday night, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning and giving Greve a chance to relax.

As it turned out, Greve’s idea of relaxing was to toss a two-hit shutout.

Greve made quick work of the Washington lineup and so did Linn-Mar, squashing the Warriors 13-0 in five innings in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Linn-Mar.

Erin Kuba down but not out

Erin Kuba had one goal coming into the softball season.

"Ever since I can remember I've wanted to play varsity as an eighth grader so I could be a five-year letter winner," Kuba said. "I was surprised he put me out there."

Kuba started in left field for Jefferson in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against Cedar Falls. The No. 7 J-Hawks (14-1) swept the Tigers, 6-0 and 3-1, running their winning streak to 13.

Kuba played only the opener and was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, meaningless stats for most. But it meant the world to Kuba to be back on the field 38 days after she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and 20 days after having her thyroid surgically removed.

Ladies golf tourney worth a look

Tis the golf season in the Metro area. And to start it off, the women's developmental Symetra Tour comes to Hunters Ridge again for a three-day event on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

This is an opportunity for men and women to check out these young players who want to get their LPGA card. I guarantee you will be amazed at their skill level.

In fact, I have always said, especially for the men, that the best way to learn a fluid golf swing is to take a look at the gals who are competing at Hunters Ridge in this edition of the Titan Tire Classic.

The final round should be held in beautiful conditions on the well-manicured surfaces of Hunters Ridge on Sunday. A trip out there and a walk in the sun would certainly give you a great perspective on how good these players trying to make the top rung of the ladies ladder really are.

Saints begin historic journey with squeaker

MUSCATINE - The Xavier Saints, trying to make history at the girls state soccer tournament this week, battled two opponents at the Muscatine Complex on Thursday.

They battled a slight case of jitters as they seek their seventh state title in a row. And they battled a team from ADM/Van Meter that didn't realize it was overmatched.

The Saints managed to conquer both.

Marinna Shroud and Kayla Armstrong scored goals as the No. 1 Saints trimmed No. 10 ADM/Van Meter, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A tournament on a hot, sunny day.
