Fuller says good-bye to Kennedy tennis

As a longtime ardent booster of the Iowa high school coed tennis tournament, it’s fitting that veteran Kennedy girls coach Vance Fuller would finish his career at the meet this week.

And his Cougar duo of Sarah Lasecki and Riley Galbraith sent him off on a high note, finishing second at the event Tuesday in Des Moines to an all-star pair from Ames in a nail-biter.

“This may be hard for some people to believe,” said Fuller’s friend Randy Krejci, who has been involved in state tennis circles for more than 40 years, “but Iowa remains the only state in the union that still has a coed program.

“Vance has had a team at the tourney since he began his distinguished career. I can’t think of a better way for him to end it.”

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Entered Thursday's game as a defensive replacement in center field and did not bat in Boston's 7-0 win over Baltimore. Year to date -- BA - .302, AB - 149, R - 17, H - 45, RBI - 13, 2B - 16, 3B - 1, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Thursday and was 0-for-4 in the Loons' 6-5 loss at South Bend. Scott is tied for the Midwest League lead in triples (6). Year to date -- BA - .256, AB - 234, R - 31, H - 60, RBI - 34, 2B - 16, 3B - 6, HR - 4, SB - 6.

 

Marion sweeps wild twinbill from Solon

Pitchers beware!

Marion hosted Solon Wednesday night in Wamac Conference baseball and after 49 hits and 19 errors by both teams, the Indians managed to win both games.

Marion captured the opener, 15-5, in six innings and took the nightcap, 12-11, by scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Marlins take Christensen in 35th round

Chad Christensen plans to drive to Minnesota this Friday and begin playing for the Mankato MoonDogs in the Northwoods League.

Beyond that, he's not sure if he'll sign a pro contract with the Miami Marlins in the next six weeks or return to Nebraska for his senior year with the Cornhuskers.

Christensen was picked by the Marlins in the 35th round of the Major League draft on Wednesday, lower than he anticipated and hoped. He was the 1,067th player selected in the 40-round draft.
