Metro Sports Report

Title IX opened doors, but not wide enough

Two weeks ago my Metro Sports Report colleague Mark Dukes recalled two significant historical events in a column titled, “Title IX not entirely fair for males.”

One occurred in 1984, when Iowa City West athlete Amy Chu – in the absence of a girls soccer program at her school – fought for and won the right to play on the boys team. When Chu entered a game against Jefferson, Mark  remembered, the J-Hawk boys walked off in protest.

The other was the landmark 1972 Title IX ruling requiring colleges that receive federal funding to take steps to provide equal opportunities, facilities and scholarships for women – in athletics as in other arenas. It was the beginning of a tectonic shift toward greater gender balance in college and high school sports.

Bell helps No. 1 Cougars trim Marshalltown

Cody Bell swings a good stick, whether he's on a golf course or a baseball field. Either way, he can belt the ball a long way.

Bell smashed a long two-run homer Monday as No. 1 Kennedy defeated Marshalltown, 9-7, on a warm Memorial Day afternoon at the Kennedy diamond.

Marshalltown scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 7-6, but Bell gave the Cougars (5-0) some breathing room when he slugged his long homer to left-center in the bottom of the sixth.

We should remember Bob Vrbicek

The start of the high school baseball season and Memorial Day weekend seems the ideal time to remember one of the Metro area’s great contributors.

They held the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament last week and it was another year in which I asked myself, “How many of those players and fans really know anything about Bob Vrbicek?"

Vrbicek (pronounced VERB-uh-check) was a crown jewel of baseball in this area years ago. He coached in the junior high school and high school ranks and was a decorated umpire, calling numerous Big Ten Conference and other college games.

Galbraith finishes 2nd in state tennis

It was a day of double disappointment for Kennedy senior Riley Galbraith on Saturday.

His dream of capturing the Class 2A high school boys state tennis championship was dashed by a longtime nemesis from Des Moines. And, at almost the very same time, the Cougar soccer team he’s starred on for the past four years fell 2-0 at the substate finals in Coralville to Iowa City West.

In one afternoon, his stellar two-sport high school career ended with two heart-breaking losses.
