MLB should work closely with preps

At long last the high school baseball season is upon us. And with Cedar Rapids Kennedy rated No. 1, it gives the Metro area some statewide pub to start the campaign.

I am sure the competition in the Metro will sharpen the Cougars for another run toward the state tournament. With that in mind, I have noted that Major League Baseball and the NCAA have been holding some closed-door meetings regarding greater cooperation between the two groups.

So I will again petition the National High School Federation to monitor those talks and remind Major League Baseball that there could be a great deal more cooperation and help between the two groups than what is now the case.

Linn-Mar doubles team upset at state

Day one of the boys high school state tennis tournament was not a good one for the Linn-Mar doubles team of Tyler McCann and Brady Anderson.

It was good, though, for Kennedy's Riley Galbraith, who remains the only Metro player still in the chase for a title.

The top-seeded doubles team of Tyler McCann and Anderson survived a scare in their first match Friday, but lost the second for their first defeat of the season.

Xavier's Schmall ousted in 1A tennis quarters

WATERLOO -- Noah Schmall won his first singles match at the Class 1A boys state tennis tournament Friday at Byrnes Park.

Schmall was eligible to compete for fifth place in the consolation round, but withdrew for personal reasons.

Schmall was the only Metro player competing in the 1A tournament.

Seniors lead Xavier's quest for 7th title

They’ve never lost a state tournament game.

For the five seniors on Xavier’s Class 2A No. 1-ranked girls soccer team, it’s a source of tremendous pride – and undeniable pressure.

“We have an advantage because we’ve been there three times already,” said Saints co-captain Annie Dale, who was named first team all-state and captain of the all-tournament team after Xavier secured its sixth consecutive title last year.
