Saints 1 step away from return trip to state

The DeWitt Central boys soccer team has an unorthodox strategy. Every five minutes, they sub 11 players and bring on an entirely new team. All game long.

You didn’t catch the Xavier Saints paying much attention to that repeated exodus.

They were too busy scoring goals.

The Saints kept their foot on the gas pedal and defeated DeWitt Central, 5-1, Wednesday in a Class 2A substate semifinal at Heco Field.

Lloyd tames Lions; Cougars reach finals

Adam Lloyd did not see Linn-Mar score 15 runs against Jefferson in the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament Monday night, but he heard about it.

It didn't faze him a bit.

Lloyd tossed a two-hitter Tuesday night as top-ranked Kennedy tamed the Lions, 12-2, in five innings in the semifinals at the Linn-Mar Field.

The Cougars (2-0) will face Prairie (2-0) in the championship game Wednesday at approximately 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Linn-Mar (1-1) will meet Xavier (1-1) in the third place game at the stadium at 5 p.m.

It's a quick journey; enjoy it

One of the most sage pieces of advice I have ever received came three years ago from a group of then senior football parents back in the fall of 2008.

It was, simply, "Enjoy it, because it goes fast."

They were talking about the four years of high school. And you know what? Looking back, they were right on the button.

Thursday night my oldest son Ryan graduates from Kennedy High School. And it does seem just like yesterday that he was a bright eyed, but nervous, freshman entering a new stage in his life. And now he is ready to embark on another.

Time always passes quickly, but perhaps even quicker if you have a son or daughter involved in extracurricular activities through school. Whether it be athletics or the fine arts, there is something for everyone. That's my first piece of advice for young parents out there today!

Prairie drops the Hammer on Xavier

In the first couple innings of Tuesday’s baseball game, Prairie pitcher Brennan Hammer was letting Xavier batters come and go a little too easily.

Then in the third, he slammed the door shut, and deadbolted it.

After allowing five runs in the first two innings, Hammer brought Xavier’s momentum and offense to a standstill, and helped Prairie defeat the Saints 10-5 in the semifinal round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament at Marion field.
