Metro Sports Report

Metro teams looking up to IC West

It hasn’t been a horrible season by any stretch for Metro teams in state tournament play thus far. But everything seems to pale in comparison to Iowa City West’s success.

West added a boys state track championship Saturday to its already-impressive resume during the 2011-2012 athletic season. It was the Trojans’ fourth state title this school year to go along with seven other Top 10 state finishes.

West has had a terrific run of athletes in recent times, and that’s really all it takes to be successful at the state level. That sounds very simple, but it’s true in the high school ranks. The cycle of athletes can make a high school’s prowess pretty large during a fixed period of time.

Lions outlast Jeff; Warriors outclass Bobcats

It was a tale of opposites at Kingston Stadium Monday night as the Washington and Linn-Mar boys soccer teams advanced to Wednesday’s Class 3A substate semifinals.

The Warriors skunked Western Dubuque 9-0 in the opener and didn’t allow a single shot at the goal the entire match.

In the nightcap, meanwhile, the Lions were knotted with Jefferson 0-0 after two overtimes and won by outscoring the J-Hawks 4-2 in the shootout.

Metro softball forecast: Jeff, Xavier elite

The Metro Sports Report will cover Cedar Rapids and Marion softball teams for the second time this season since coming to existence in January of 2011. To kick off the start of the season I will attempt to breakdown the upcoming campaign with an overview of the local schools and a prediction of how each school will do.

Xavier and Jefferson have been atop the Metro for many years and that was no different last season as Jefferson finished with the area’s best record at 32-7 followed by Xavier at 29-13.

Despite the great regular seasons, both teams came up short in their quest for a state berth. Xavier fell to Iowa City West in the regional semifinal and Jefferson dropped an extra-inning game in its regional final against West Des Moines Dowling.
