Metro Sports Report

New group playing for great cause

Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend the annual luncheon held by the El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids for the football players, cheerleaders and families of the North team for the annual Shrine All-Star Game that will be played in Ames on July 21.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the game, and it still to this day reminds you of one of the highlights of the state's sports calendar.

This year, the Metro will be sending five players to suit up for the North squad, with Highway 30 as the unofficial dividing line between the north and south. Kennedy's Josh Jahlas, Linn-Mar's Mark Atwater, Marion's Jake McDonald, Xavier's Jordan Weber and Washington's Flynn Heald will be among the 46 players on this year's North team.

The players will be put through their paces for an eight-day period in July on the Iowa State campus and will have an opportunity to make life-long friends during the preparation for the game.

Ryan adds ACC to Uthoff's banned list

Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan has added the entire Atlantic Coast Conference to the list of schools that are not allowed to contact Jarrod Uthoff about joining their program.

"I just got an e-mail about it today from Wisconsin's compliance office," Uthoff told the Metro Sports Report Monday night. "I didn't see it coming."

Uthoff informed Ryan last week that he planned to leave the Badgers after one year and transfer to another college. Since then, Ryan has put the entire Big Ten, the entire ACC, Iowa State and Marquette on the "restricted" list of schools that are not allowed to contact the 6-foot-8 forward.

Uthoff starred at Cedar Rapids Jefferson and was Iowa's "Mr. Basketball" in 2011. He was redshirted at Wisconsin this season as a freshman and appeared to figure prominently in the team's future, but said he didn't feel comfortable in Wisconsin's offense and is looking for a better fit.

Bo Ryan is unfair to Uthoff

Wisconsin evidently wants it both ways.

When Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Jarrod Uthoff requested his release last week from the Badger basketball program, Coach Bo Ryan placed restrictions on him. Uthoff could not transfer to another Big Ten school, Iowa State or Marquette without paying a price. Ryan added the entire Atlantic Coast Conference to that list on Monday.

Yet when Ben Brust wanted to get out of his commitment to Iowa two years ago after Hawkeye Coach Todd Lickliter was fired, Brust was allowed to transfer to Wisconsin without having to sit out a season. Brust won an appeal to the Big Ten Conference after Lickliter was released and Fran McCaffery was hired. Reports were that Ryan was one of the coaches that stirred the appeal process.

Linn-Mar girls sparkle in 4x400 relay

The best was saved for last at the Linn-Mar Relays Tuesday night.

All seven teams in the 4x400 relay came in thinking they had a legitimate shot to crack the 4:08 mark seen as fast enough to qualify for next week’s Drake Relays in Des Moines.

The cut-off date is Thursday, so this was their last chance.

“It will be the race of the night,” longtime Linn-Mar assistant coach Max Huffman said beforehand. “The competition will bring out their best.”

J-Hawks' impressive streak ends in loss

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson boys soccer team had been very impressive in the last couple games.

The J-Hawks battled yet another highly ranked opponent, the third top six ranked foe in as many games, but came out on the wrong end this time.

Class 3A top-ranked Iowa City West edged the No. 16 J-Hawks, 1-0,Tuesday afternoon at lower Kingston.
