Cougars grab 2nd at Wilkinson Invitational

Allison Culver, McKenzie Drahn and Kathia Wampole won individual titles Saturday to help the Kennedy Cougars finish in second place at the Wilkinson Invitational track meet at Kingston Stadium.

Culver won the 3000 meter run, Drahn claimed the long jump and Wampole took care of the 800 as the Cougars rolled up 122 points in the six-team meet.

MVC makes changes in girls basketball

Things will be a little different for girls basketball teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference next season.

For one thing, all the MVC teams will play a 13-game conference schedule next season instead of a 16-game schedule. And for another, some regular-season games between MVC teams will not count in the league standings.

The conference approved the changes at a league meeting in Dubuque on Wednesday.

5 Metro stars picked for Shrine Bowl

Five football players from the Metro area have been selected for the 40th Annual Shrine All-Star Game that will be played on Saturday, July 21 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

Flynn Heald of Cedar Rapids Washington, Mark Atwater of Linn-Mar, Josh Jahlas of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Jordan Weber of Xavier and Jake McDonald of Marion were honored at a luncheon Friday at the El Kahir Shrine Center on Blairs Ferry Road in Cedar Rapids along with other players, coaches and cheerleaders for the event.

The Shrine All-Star Game serves as a fundraiser for the Shrine Hospital programs for children. More than $2.2 million has been raised for the hospital program since the all-star series began in 1973.

Shrine Bowl needs a new home

Friday the El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids welcomes some of the summer's Shrine all-star football players and coaches to its club on Blairs Ferry Road for what has become an annual luncheon to salute the participants from this part of the state who will play in the game on July 21 to benefit the Shrine hospitals.

It's a great pleasure to welcome Jerry Hoffman, who is the statewide head of the Shrine Bowl, to our city again. And it's worth noting there will be a change in the Shrine Bowl venue in the future, thanks to the NCAA.

It has been deemed by that organization that holding Shrine high school games in college stadia is now a no-no. The reason being, too many scouts and agents have been browsing around.
