Bob Brooks

Health care workers are true All-Americans

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Sportscaster Bob Brooks had surgery March 13 due to complications from a hiatal hernia. He spent one week in the hospital and is recovering at his home in Cedar Rapids).

I'm trying to get back in the ballgame!

I'm looking forward to rehabbing and getting back to the sports desk at K-Memory. I'm anxious to do that, but not over-anxious.

The situation is that the rehab is being done at home. It's going, but it's going to take some time and I thus have seen the world of sports in a very, very different light by following on television instead of in person. And as we've been talking here at my home, you think of the things that have happened in sports in the last few days. The world has been turned upside-down by developments with the Peyton Manning story, the Tim Tebow story and the National Football League's cleansing of itself. And along with the Madness of March and the basketball tournament coming down to the title game, it is an amazing thing to see sometimes.

Even though you wouldn't want to go through what I went through, the amazing thing is that you've got to stick with it every, every day and keep moving forward. With the baseball season coming up and with all of the personalities that have been brought forward in recent days, I never could have dreamed about the things that are being tossed around.

MacDougall hoping for offer from UNI

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Matt MacDougall likes everything about the University of Northern Iowa.

He likes the school, he likes the basketball program and he likes the fact it's not too far away from home.

He'll like the Panthers even more if UNI Coach Ben Jacobson offers him a chance to join the basketball program next season as a preferred walk-on.

"I really want to go to UNI," MacDougall said Wednesday night after playing in the second annual Eastern Iowa All-Star game at Iowa City West High School.

Mees in a hurry to lead Marion

MOUNT VERNON - Lukas Mees is a young man with a plan.

A straight-A senior at Marion High School, he's narrowed his college choices to five schools that combine academics and a strong track program. He wants to go to medical school and become a psychiatrist.

In the meantime, he has his sights set on leading his Marion track team to the state tournament. His personal goal is to set five school track records along the way.

"I want to leave a legacy," he said with confidence.

That might seem like idle boastfulness considering the Wamac Conference indoor meet Tuesday at Cornell College was only his second meet in his first-ever season on the track team. But Mees has come out from the blocks blazing this spring.

Prairie relay: '3 babies and grandma'

CEDAR FALLS - They affectionately call her "grandma," and 16-year-old sophomore Hannah Grimm doesn't mind at all.

Compared to the other members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie 4x400 meter relay team, Grimm is the oldest member of the club even though she's just a 10th grader.

All the other runners on the varsity 4x400 are freshmen. "They're all babies," Prairie Coach Chris Perkins said Tuesday, in jest and admiration.

These babies can scoot, although it might be a few years - months? - before they reach full maturity on a track.

Dellamuth helps Prairie shine

CEDAR FALLS - Before they could star at Cedar Rapids Prairie, all three members of the Dellamuth family had to prove they could survive their own fiercely competitive battles at home.

That goes for Madison as well as her two brothers, Austin and Mitchell. The competitive spirit runs deep.

"All three of us have it. Me, my brother and my sister," Austin Dellamuth said Monday during the Dickinson Relays at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. "We get in fights a lot playing sports."
