Marion surges in 4th to upset Kennedy girls

Marion outscored Kennedy 16-9 in the fourth quarter Saturday night to upset the Class 4A seventh-ranked Cougars, 69-62, at Marion in the regular season finale for both teams.

At the end of three quarters the game was knotted at 53. Kennedy's Courtney Strait scored 16 of her game-high 35 points in that quarter.

But at that point Marion went to a diamond-and-one defense and dared the rest of the Cougars to score. Kennedy scored two field goals and nine points in the deciding quarter.

“In the fourth quarter they put a lot more emphasis on me and I was not able to get the ball,” said Strait. “It seemed like I never got the ball with an opportunity to turn it into points."

Washington junior guard Brock Butterfield will have something to tell his children and grandchildren some day. He picked the pocket of a McDonald’s All-American.

Searching for their first win of the year, Butterfield and his Warrior teammates gave an impressive effort against No. 8 Linn-Mar before bowing, 62-56, Friday night at Washington.

The Warrior crowd roared in delight when Marcus Paige, a McDonald’s All-American selection, was stripped cleanly by Butterfield at midcourt in the second quarter. Paige fell to the ground as Butterfield scored an uncontested layup.

The play was a momentum-changer and confidence-builder and helped the upset-minded Warriors keep things close. The hosts outscored Linn-Mar 24-14 in the fourth quarter and came back from as many as 16 points down to make things interesting.

“Defense can show up every night, while offense comes and goes.”

That’s how Xavier Coach Tom Lilly summed up his team’s performance after the fifth-ranked Saints put a stranglehold on Prairie for much of Friday night’s contest between Mississippi Division foes at Xavier.

It’s a philosophy he’s banking on as his team sprints into the postseason tournament next week.

Xavier punctuated its solid regular-season resume with a convincing 56-29 home win over the Hawks, balancing the season ledger between the two teams.

Coleman helps No. 10 Cougars belt J-Hawks

Josiah Coleman and Taylor Olson are star players for their high school basketball teams and friendly rivals.

Next season they could be college teammates at Coppin State University if things fall into place.

Coleman got the best of his buddy Friday night as No. 10 Kennedy drubbed Jefferson, 55-39, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game that featured a monster dunk by Coleman.

Coleman collected 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists for the Cougars (14-5, 9-5), while Olson scored 14 points and played his normally strong floor game for the J-Hawks (12-7, 8-6).

The line between victory and defeat is sometimes so fine that it’s hard to define.

Depending how you look at it, the Xavier boys either let a win slip away Friday or the Prairie boys escaped a loss.

The fact is that the Saints were ahead at home by 10 points with two minutes left in regulation and then by two with 10 seconds to go.

The Hawks scored 10 straight points to tie the game once and two more at the buzzer to send it into overtime. In the nip-and-tuck extra four minutes, Prairie prevailed from the free throw line, 67-62.
