Lassen back; Linn-Mar beats No. 6 Rams

It couldn’t have been scripted any better.

Linn-Mar junior Matt Lassen came off the bench at the start of the second quarter Tuesday night and immediately popped in a long 3-pointer.

Just like he used to before a serious head injury in the third game of the season that had kept him out of action for two months.

“Coach told me not to hold back,” said Lassen of his first shot in his first game back. “Andy (Henry) hit me with a nice pass and I just let it loose. It felt good.”

He played in short spurts the rest of the night, but teammate Marcus Paige said his presence was a morale booster as the No. 8 Lions whipped No. 6 Dubuque Senior, 62-55, to tie the Rams atop the MVC Mississippi Division at 10-3 with three games left.

“It was great to have Matt back in there,” said the senior Paige, who again controlled the game and led his team with 23 points.  “He’s a hard-working kid. He’s been working extremely hard. So it was nice to see him get an open look and hit it with confidence.”

Clock runs out on Warriors, 55-54

They don’t stop the clock after a made basket in high school basketball in the final minute like they do in college and the NBA. The Washington Warriors wish they did.

On Tuesday, Cedar Falls held on for a 55-54 win on Warrior Senior Night, despite a controversial finish where the Tigers did not attempt an in-bounds pass as time expired.

Benton pounds Marion to stay perfect

David met Goliath on Tuesday night – but this time the giant won.

Undefeated Benton Community used its speed, size and silky shooting to dominate from the opening tipoff and trounce Marion, 57-27, on the Indians’ senior night.

The Benton Bobcats (20-0, 18-0) are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and showed why.

“You hope on senior night playing the No. 1 team in the state, that’s going to give you a little extra motivation,” said Marion Coach Brian O’Donnell. “But I think Benton played like they had something to prove, and they proved why they’re ranked No. 1 in the state.”

The Bobcats scored the first eight points of the game and raced to a 22-8 advantage after one period. Meanwhile, the Indians couldn’t get a bucket to fall until nearly five minutes into the game.

Although the pace was less torrid after the opening quarter, the efficient Bobcats continued to overwhelm the Indians’ zone defense and disrupt them mercilessly on offense. They led 35-13 at the half and were up 43-17 after three periods.

The final two district meets were held Monday afternoon, and the Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the unofficial quailifiers for Saturday's boys state swimming meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.
