Lassen hopes to play again this season

Matt Lassen knows there are no guarantees, but he's confident he'll be cleared to play basketball for the Linn-Mar Lions again this season.

Lassen suffered a serious head injury last Friday against Iowa City West and spent four days in hospitals, but he's home now in Marion and feeling much better.

"I definitely think I'll be back this year," he said Thursday afternoon in a telephone interview. "It all depends if we get to state and stuff like that.

"I'm pretty confident they'll give me another CAT Scan and I'm confident it will show that everything is better and they'll clear me to play."

Lassen will be evaluated again in mid-January and cannot practice at least until then. "There are still a lot of things up in the air right now," he acknowledged.

Lassen does not remember the accident itself, but he remembers what happened until that point.

IOWA CITY - The Prairie wrestling team unleashed a pinfest Thursday night and whipped both Xavier and Iowa City High in a Mississippi Valley Conference double dual meet at City High.

Prairie had nine pins in a 76-4 rout of Xavier and eight pins in a 72-6 romp past City High.

Xavier beat City High 40-33.

Prairie's Andrew Netolicky had a pair of pins, including a 19-second decking of Xavier's Austin Gloede. River Whitters at 138 and Cam Rathje at 170 also had a pair of pins for the Hawks.

Xavier won its first six matches against City High to build a 33-0 lead, but the Little Hawks won the next six and the match at 33-33. The Saints reclaimed the lead, 36-33, when Jerry Duball scored a 5-0 decision over Alex Lemus. Nick Drahozal's major decision at 126 sealed the win for Xavier.

Lassen resting at home; sidelined at least 5 weeks

Ron and Susie Lassen were enjoying the Linn-Mar High School basketball game last Friday night when they were quickly - and nervously - summoned to the court.

Their son, Matt, had taken a nasty spill under the basket and was lying on the floor, not moving. Thus began a traumatic journey that was eased somewhat when Matt was released from the hospital Tuesday after suffering a concussion, a seizure, bleeding on the brain and swelling.

He will not attend school again until after the holiday break and will not play basketball again until late January, if at all this season. But he's home, resting as comfortably as possible.

The unsung heroes at our high schools

Last Friday night the Iowa Hawkeyes met the Iowa State Cyclones in their annual men's basketball matchup.

Why it was played on a Friday -- a high school night -- is a subject for an entirely different column. But the fact that it was gave me the opportunity to take in a prep game as a spectator. It was a fairly cut-and-dry choice as to what game to attend.
