Warriors Klaus, Barnes sign LOIs

In signing their national letters-of-intent Tuesday, two Washington seniors will be continuing their athletic pursuits at the collegiate level with close friends and teammates.

Kelli Klaus next year will join the basketball program at Colorado Christian University with former Warrior Ashley Piper, now a freshman at the 1,000-student liberal arts college.

And all-state swimmer Morgan Barnes will be attending the University of South Dakota along with Ian Ford, who inked his scholarship offer with the 6,000-student state school last week.

Roloff excited about young Cougars

Dennis Roloff is glad he did not retire as the girls basketball coach at Kennedy High School after the 2010-11 campaign.

He retired as a full-time teacher and stepped down as the boys track coach, but elected to return for his 21st season with the girls basketball program.

He loves coaching and knew there were some talented young players on their way to the varsity.

Supervisors to offer $1 annual lease to Prospect Meadows

The Linn County Board of Supervisors agreed Monday to offer developers of the Prospect Meadows sports complex a 50-year, dollar-a-year lease on 121 acres of county-owned land north of Marion.

Legal wording is to be polished this week, and supervisors are expected to give formal approval to the offer next meeting.

Assistant Linn County Attorney Jeff Clark said that if the proposal is accepted by Prospect Meadows officials, a public hearing on the transaction will then be scheduled.  He said the process should be completed by the end of the year.

O'Donnell looks forward to 2nd year at Marion

Brian O'Donnell knows everyone's name now. And the girls know their coach, who teaches at a different school.

Yes, O'Donnell's second year as the girls basketball coach at Marion High School should be smoother than the first.

"Absolutely," he said. "Just knowing the kids and them knowing me, I think that establishes familiarity. It's nice on both ends."

O'Donnell teaches at Springville High School and commutes to Marion for basketball practice, so he doesn't see his players during the day or have a chance to answer their questions until he sees them in the gym after school.

Stewart will join golf team at Butler

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Brigham Stewart has decided to join the men's golf program at Butler University next year.

Stewart helped the Cougars finish fourth in the Class 4A state meet this season. He also helped Kennedy win the Mississippi Valley Conference title and the CRANDIC championship.

Stewart won the MVC Super Meet title with an 8-under-par 64 at Twin Pines and earned medalist honors at the Johnston Invitational with a 1-under-par 71.
