Jer Garman scores 2 TDs for North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Jer Garman rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as North Dakota topped Black Hills State, 53-19, in the 46th Annual Potato Bowl USA.

Garman, a freshman from Linn-Mar, carried the ball 16 times and scored the first two touchdowns of his college career with runs of 2 and 3 yards.

The game was witnessed by 8,545 fans at the Alerus Center.

Kennedy 2nd at Dubuque Invitational

DUBUQUE - No. 8 Kennedy took a spotless record into the championship match of the Dubuque Invitational, but the Cougars couldn't get past No. 3 Iowa City High.

City High downed the Cougars, 13-25, 25-13, 15-7, to win the championship.

Kennedy was 5-1, including a 3-0 mark in pool play when it didn't lose a set. The Cougars beat Davenport Central (21-11, 21-16), Lancaster, Wis. (21-14, 21-10) and Bettendorf (21-18, 21-17) in pool play. The Cougars beat Bettendorf again in the quarterfinals, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11, then topped Pleasant Valley, 25-18, 25-21, in the semifinals.

Xavier went 1-2 in pool play, then won two matches to capture the consolation championship. The Saints were beaten by Dubuque Senior (21-12, 21-18) and Iowa City High (21-13, 21-11) and beat Jefferson (21-15, 21-5) in pool play. The Saints then beat Lancaster, Wis, (25-19, 25-14) and Western Dubuque (25-22, 25-21) to capture the consolation final.

Jefferson finished 0-4.

Warriors 11th at Minnesota meet

MINNEAPOLIS - Cedar Rapids Washington's Etienne Nzoyisaba and Robert Hogg finished 13th and 16th, respectively, to propel the Warriors to an 11th-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational held Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.

There were 50 teams entered representing Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Washington finished fourth among Iowa teams.

Bismarch, ND, won the team race with 102 points and Bismarck's Jake Leingang was first, running the 5k course in 15 minutes, 33.44 seconds.

West Des Moines Dowling was second, Ames sixth and Cedar Falls eighth. Iowa City High was 24th and Waterloo West 36th.

The top Iowa finisher was Daniel Huff of Waverly-Shell Rock, who finished fourth in a time of 15:45.44. West Des Moines Valley's Ben Anderson was fifth and Dowling's Cole Decker was 10th.

Saints get 1-2 punch to the kisser

There's no truth to the rumor that Xavier High School is going to put the Oklahoma Sooners and Green Bay Packers on their schedule.

Cedar Falls and Iowa City High have been tough enough.

The Saints took another punch to the face Friday night when Barkley Hill and the top-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers socked them, 27-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.

The Saints got walloped by No.2 Iowa City High, 52-24, last week, giving them a rough 1-2 uppercut in two straight weeks.

"They're both great teams," Xavier Coach Duane Schulte said. "They've both got great players and they both have great coaches."

Hill slashed for 219 yards and two touchdowns as he continued his remarkable campaign. He's eclipsed 200 yards in all five games this season and has rushed for 1,135 yards and 21 TDs, giving him an average of 227 yards per contest.

"Oh, he's terrific. He's terrific. I think he's got two more years of eligibility!" joked Cedar Falls co-coach Pat Mitchell, engaging in some wishful thinking. "He had a big night again. Super back."

Actually, Hill has four more years of eliibility, but they'll be at Iowa State University when the 6-foot, 210-pound back joins the Cyclones next season.
