Surging Indians blank Vinton-Shellsburg, 27-0

As he stuffed dirty jerseys into the wash tub back at the Marion High School locker room Friday night, Coach Tony Perkins praised a defense that had just whitewashed Vinton-Shellsburg 27-0 a short bus ride across town at Thomas Park Field.

"They are a very, very physical football team," he said of the visiting Vikings. "And to be able to shut them down like we did makes me very, very proud."

The Indians held their opponents to just two first downs, one in each half, and they never let them close to the goal line. The visitors could muster but one pass completion for a measly five yards and only 71 yards rushing.

"The defense is playing just outstanding right now," Perkins said. "They're keeping their assignments, and they're flying to the ball.

Bredeson stars as Warriors clip Rams, 35-10

DUBUQUE – Mitch Bredeson is starting to make a name for himself as Washington’s featured running back.

Bredeson rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns to help the Warriors snap a two-game losing streak with a 35-10 victory over Dubuque Senior Friday at Dalzell Field.

Bredeson needed 30 carries to reach his rushing total, and every one of his plunges came with heavy resistance from Senior’s front seven. In other words, the Washington junior earned his yards against the Rams.

“I give all the credit to my (offensive) line,” Bredeson said. “They did a great job tonight. I’m doing a better job reading my holes and getting to the second level.”

Bredeson has stepped in for injured tailback Will Griffin. Washington Coach Tony Lombardi admires Bredeson’s work ethic.

Rogers, Iowa City West rip J-Hawks, 63-14

A Cyclone blew through Kingston Stadium Friday night.

Iowa City West senior quarterback Charles Rogers, who earlier Friday committed to play football at Iowa State, ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more and the Trojans blew past Jefferson, 63-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Rogers played only the first half, which ended with the Trojans (4-1) holding a 49-7 lead. He completed 8-of-8 passes for 164 yards and ran 11 times for 53 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 4 and 4 yards and threw touchdown passes of 36 and 49 yards to Dondre Alexander and Jeremy Morgan, respectively.

Cedar Valley ends first season with 57-6 setback

CENTRAL CITY - Five lost fumbles, a lost onside kick and an interception were just too insurmountable for Cedar Valley Christian Friday night against Central City.

The Huskies ended their first season of eight-man football with a 57-6 defeat, giving them an 0-4 mark for Year 1.

“Turnovers were our undoing tonight, but we played tough and never stopped playing hard,” Cedar Valley Coach Ed Betsworth said. “This is our first year and now we will improve from here."

Central City (1-5) scored on a 10-yard pass from David Mosher to Nick McCarry on just the third play of the game. The Wildcats pulled off an onside kick, and with 10:41 still left in the first quarter Mosher hit McCarry again, this time for a 15-yard strike and it was 16-0.

Cedar Valley (0-4) managed a couple of first downs in the ensuing drive but the possession ended with an interception by Brandon Stevens. Central City promptly executed a 42-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard dive by Mosher. The Huskies never recovered.
