Will 'The Record' ever be broken?

State track meets are coming up in a couple weeks and every year I wonder if The Record will be broken.

Two of the longest running boys’ state track records and all-time bests are held by Cedar Rapids products – Doug Lane of Jefferson in the shot put and David Korir of Washington in the half mile. It is Lane’s mark that may stand forever.

Lane was a big, scrappy athlete and one of many the J-Hawks had in the 1960s. Lane lettered in football, basketball and track, but it was in the shot put ring that he made his mark.

In a meet in 1968, Lane tossed the shot 70 feet 11 inches, becoming only the third American high school athlete at the time to exceed 70 feet. It put him, and his coach John Ask, on the cover of the AAU Magazine. Earlier, Lane had broken the state record at the Drake Relays with a heave of 67-2 ½. He capped his career with his third state title in 1968 with a still-state meet record 65-11 ½.

For four decades, no one has really come close to Long’s 70-foot effort. The closest has been Marion’s Drew Clark, who set the Class 3A record in 2009 with a throw of 64-7 ¾.

Long went on to become a two-time All-America at the University of Southern California and a NCAA National Indoor champion in 1972. He became a successful businessman in southern California.

And still holder of The Record.

TENNIS NUGGETS – A couple jaw-droppers were seen or heard this past week in the Metro tennis ranks.

Zach Bohannon will walk on at Wisconsin

Zach Bohannon declined an offer to join the University of Wisconsin basketball program as a walk-on several years ago when they recruited him at Linn-Mar High School.

This time he said yes.

Bohannon told the Metro Sports Report on Monday that he's accepted an offer to finish his college basketball career with Coach Bo Ryan and the Badgers.

Bohannon, a 6-foot-8 forward, spent two years at the Air Force Academy before deciding he did not want to pursue a military career. He said he'll join Wisconsin this season as a walk-on with a chance to earn a scholarship the following two years.

Bohannon will have to redshirt this season due to NCAA transfer rules, then will have two years of eligibility with the Badgers in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Furnish wins the round, Askelson the title

There are two names to remember when it comes to girls golf in the Metro area this year.

They are Kimmy Askelson and Megan Furnish, and they both distinguished themselves Monday at the Mississippi Valley Conference division meet at Twin Pines Golf Course.

Askelson won the Valley Division title with a 36-hole score of 77-78-155 to claim medalist honors, while Furnish tied for the day's low round at Twin Pines with a 3-over-par 76.

Askelson won the MVC Valley title on the strength of her 77 at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville at the MVC Super Meet last Monday and her 78 at Twin Pines in Cedar Rapids on Monday. Furnish shot an 82 at Brown Deer for a 36-hole total of 82-76-158, good for third place overall.

Askelson was named the MVC Super Meet champion last week and the MVC Valley Division champion on Monday. She also was named the Valley Division Athlete of the Year.

"I like it. Yeah, it feels good," she said after winning the first MVC titles of her career.

Askelson, a senior at Xavier High School, was not entirely happy with her two-day scores in the MVC meets, however.

"I was with the 77 at Brown Deer, because that was tough, but not today," she said after her 5-over 78 at Twin Pines. "This is my home course and I scrambled the whole day."

The players had to endure a 45-minute rain delay Monday morning before finishing their rounds.

Furnish, a junior at Jefferson High School and the Valley medalist and Athlete of the Year a year ago, toured Twin Pines in 37-39-76 to share medalist honors with Megan Miehe of Dubuque Hempstead. Miehe had a 36-hole performance of 81-76-157 to finish third in the Valley standings, two shots behind Askelson and one shot ahead of Furnish.

Griffin next great Wash tailback?

Will Griffin thundered down the track at Kingston Stadium Friday night in the Mississippi Valley Conference meet with a rare combination of speed, power and grace.

He has immense thighs, a powerful torso and a muscular upper body, capable of running the 100-meter dash in 10.8 seconds for Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

He stands 5-foot-8 and 195 pounds, and pity the poor defensive back who tries to tackle him this fall when he becomes the No.1 tailback at Tailback High.

"I expect 2,000 yards out of him," said Alex Carr, Griffin's teammate, friend and mentor.

That's no idle boast by Carr. Andre Dawson rushed for 2,212 yards as Washington's No.1 tailback in 2009 and Carr scooted for 1,911 yards last fall for the Warriors.

"I expect that out of every running back at Washington," Carr remarked. "We've always had a tradition of having good running backs. I don't think anything is going to fall off.

"He's a little different than Andre and I are, but he's just as good."
