KCC golfers take 5th at national tourney

FOLEY, Ala. - The Kirkwood men's golf team displayed remarkable balance all week and placed fifth at the NJCAA Division II national tournament at the Glen Lakes Golf Course in Foley, Ala.

All five Eagles finished in a cluster, separated by only four shots of each other after 72 holes.

JD Goodfellow led Kirkwood in 17th place at 5-over-par 293. Niall Powell was 23rd at 7-over 295, Max Thrune finished 25th at 8-over 296, Ryan Morrison tied for 27th at 9-over 297 and Dawson Peters also tied for 27th at 9-over 297.

The Eagles posted their best round of the tournament Thursday with a collective team score of 1-under-par 287. Powell fired a 3-under 69 Thursday to lead the way and Peters shot a 1-under 71. Goodfellow, Powell and Thrune were named third team All-Americans.

IVL champs heading 'home' for 2018 season

The Fairfax Stars captured the Iowa Valley League title last season and also claimed the IABA state title to finish a terrific year.

Now the 2018 champions are headed home.

The Stars, who feature a strong nucleus of former Mount Mercy and Kennedy ballplayers, will be playing all their home games on friendly fields this time around.

The Stars have scheduled three doubleheaders on the new turf field at Mount Mercy University and they'll also have two home doubleheaders on Herkelman Field at Kennedy.

The Iowa Valley League, which began way back in 1935, begins its 83rd season this Sunday with three doubleheaders.

The Stars begin the season at Walford, Norway visits Red Top, and Williamsburg plays at Watkins. All of the action begins at 1 p.m.

Kirkwood golfers 6th at nationals

FOLEY, Ala. - The Kirkwood men's golf team enjoyed its best round at  the junior college national tournament this week and stands in sixth place heading into the final 18 holes Thursday.

JD Goodfellow fired a 2-under-par 70 and Ryan Morrison posted a 1-under 71 to help the Eagles stay in contention for a top-5 finish at the NJCAA Division II tournament at Glen Lakes Golf Club.

Kirkwood has a 54-hole score of 884, just two shots out of fifth place.

Goodfellow and Max Thrune are tied for 11th place in the individual standings at 3-over 219. They are currently three shots out of 10th  place.

Ryan Morrison of Kirkwood is tied for 35th at 8-over 224. Dawson Peters and Niall Powell are tied for 38th at 10-over 226.

Eagles draw No. 3 seed for World Series

ENID, Okla. - The Kirkwood Eagles have drawn the No. 3 seed for the NJCAA Division II World Series and will face Madison (Wis.) in the opening round Saturday at 1 p.m. at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

LSU Eunice (54-6) drew the No. 1 seed for the 10-team tournament, which will run from May 26 through June 2. Parkland (48-14-1) is the No. 2 seed, followed by Kirkwood (42-15-1), Northern Oklahoma (46-14) and Sinclair (44-9) in the top-5. Madison is the No. 6 seed, followed by Scottsdale, Brunswick, Monroe and CCBC Essex.

LSU Eunice and Parkland, the top seeds, drew a bye in the opening round.

Kirkwood is making its first trip to the World Series since 1999. The Eagles made four trips to the World Series in the 1990's and finished second on two occasions.

Eagles 6th at national golf tourney

FOLEY, Ala. - The Kirkwood Eagles are sitting in sixth place after two rounds of the NJCAA Division II national golf tournament at the Glen Lakes Club in Foley, Ala.

The Eagles were tied for fourth place after the first round Monday after shooting 294, but they submitted a 300 team score Tuesday and are 13 shots over par at 594.

Meridian Community College fired the best round of the tournament Tuesday with a four-man score of 285 and holds a nine-shot lead at  579. Kirkwood trails Meridian by 15 shots with 36 holes remaining Wednesday and Thursday.

Max Thrune of Kirkwood is tied for seventh in the individual standings at 1-over-par 145 with rounds of 73 and 72. He trails the leader by six shots.

JD Goodfellow is tied for 27th at 5-over 149 with rounds of 74 and 75. Niall Powell is tied for 30th at 6-over 150 with rounds of 75 and 75.
