Olson leads Metro and MVC in scoring

Jacob Olson scored a total of 28 points for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson boys basketball team last season and averaged just 1.4 per game.

He scored more points than that in a single outing last week when he poured in 31 markers in a victory over Cedar Rapids Washington.

Olson, a 5-foot-10 junior, leads all Metro players in scoring this season and also leads the entire Mississippi Valley Conference at a healthy 18.6 points per outing at the holiday break, according to the IHSAA.

Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman said Olson has a high basketball IQ and basketball "savvy," helping him capitalize on opportunities as the team's point guard.

Jefferson has the best record among all Metro teams at the holiday break with a 6-2 mark, thanks in great measure to Olson's work in the backcourt. He's blessed with great quickness that helps him shed defenders, get to the basket or pull up for medium-range jumpers or soft tear-drops.

Olson learned the game by studying his older brother, Taylor, who was a premier point guard at Jefferson and helped the J-Hawks reach the state tournament in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Taylor Olson is now starting at Kirkwood.

Jeremy Strutz of Cedar Valley Christian is the No.2 scorer in the Metro with a 17.0 average this season for the Huskies. Cedar Valley is a member of Class 1A in the IHSAA and has a competitive squad.

Xavier point guard Trey Sampson ranks third in the Metro in scoring at 15.1 points, followed by Ky Kramer of Jefferson (13.4 ppg) and Tyler Gunderson of Marion (13.1).

Xavier center Matt Nelson, a 6-foot-8 junior, leads the Metro in rebounding at 8.1 per game. Benjamin Struss of Kennedy is second in rebounds at 7.2 per game, followed by Jon Landis of Cedar Valley Christian (6.4), Kramer (6.3), Terry Jenkins of Jefferson (6.0) and Isaac Frazier of Marion (6.0).

There is a good battle for the No.1 spot in the Metro in assists with Strutz, Olson, Landis, Anthony Carter of Kennedy and Daly Quinn of Marion all clustered at approximately four assists per game.
