Hobbs helps Warriors trip Saints

PDF

The Stealth Bomber delivered her weapons at the right time Thursday night for the Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team.

Aleena Hobbs hit a key 3-pointer and scored 16 points as the Warriors topped Xavier, 57-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.

Washington volleyball coach Kari Lombardi gave Hobbs the nickname of "Stealth Bomber" this fall because the 5-foot-10 junior is a good jumper who can slam the ball at the net and surprise opponents with her power.

Washington basketball coach Frank Howell hasn't come up with his own nickname for her yet.

"No, I guess I don't," he said. "That's unfortunate, because I usually come up with some pretty good nicknames.

"The Stealth Bomber is applicable to basketball, too."

The Warriors (8-2, 4-2) used key 3-pointers in the fourth period to gain the edge in a tight contest.

Abby Herb gave Washington the lead for good, 42-40, with a 3-pointer with 6:40 left in the game. Madison Kramer made it 45-40 with a triple about a minute later, and Hobbs hit her 3-pointer with 3:30 remaining to make it 48-42.

They were the only 3-pointers in the game for Washington.

Hobbs made four straight free throws in the final 61 seconds to help the Warriors escape with the victory. "She's such a pivotal player at both ends for us," said Howell.

Hobbs confirmed she doesn't have a nickname in basketball, but "Miss Versatility" would describe her play for the Warriors.

"I want to do all the things on the floor, not just be able to do one thing," she said. "I want to be all over."

Hobbs wasn't sure what to make of "Stealth Bomber" when Lombardi first came up with it.

"I was surprised, because I never really knew what that meant," she said. "But it was interesting when I heard it."

Hobbs played a strong game despite playing on a tender ankle.

Thursday's contest featured a pair of ranked ballclubs as the Warriors, ranked No.10 in Class 5A, battled the Saints, ranked No.6 in Class 4A.

The game was tied, 28-28, at halftime. Xavier scored the first six points of the second half for a 34-28 advantage. The Saints led 40-39 on a layup by Kayla Armstrong, but Herb hit her 3-pointer to steer Washington in the right direction.

Both clubs used pressure defense the entire game, forcing a string of turnovers by both sides. The Warriors did a better job of protecting the ball in the fourth quarter as they moved ahead.

Herb and Dani Franklin scored 12 points apiece for Washington.

Ashley Stulken led Xavier (6-5, 4-2) with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

"She's one of the kids we've come to rely on," said Xavier Coach Tom Lilly. "We just have to give her some help."

McKenna Andersen scored eight points for Xavier. The Saints are playing without 6-foot senior Lisa Boomgarden, who is sidelined with a broken bone in her leg.
