Hembera is the hero for Cedar Valley

MONTEZUMA - The Cedar Valley Christian girls basketball team trailed by four points with less than 10 seconds left against Montezuma Tuesday night and it looked hopeless.

That's when Shelby Hembera, a scoring machine all night, took over and led the Huskies to a thrilling 40-39 victory.

Hembera scored, got fouled and made the free throw to pull Cedar Valley within 39-38 in the final seconds, but she wasn't done yet.

Montezuma committed a turnover and the Huskies got the ball under their own basket with a scant seven-tenths of a second left in the game.

The Huskies lobbed the ball to Hembera, who immediately scored to give her team a 40-39 edge with two-tenths of a second remaining. Hembera was fouled on that play as well, but she deliberately missed the free throw and time expired.

Hembera, a 6-foot sophomore, poured in 29 of her team's 40 points and scored five points in the final seconds.

The victory was Cedar Valley's second of the season and lifted the Huskies to a 2-14 record. The last-second victory atoned somewhat for a tough loss to Wapsie Valley on Saturday, when the Huskies lost on a last-second 3-pointer.

Mackenzie James scored 11 points for Montezuma (6-14).
