Solon girls oust Indians from tourney

The Solon girls knocked down 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and beat Marion, 64-50, Wednesday in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal basketball game.

Solon (11-11) advances to play Cedar Rapids Xavier in a semifinal round game Saturday night at Xavier.

Marion (13-9) had one fewer field goal than Solon, but the Indians struggled at the free-throw line, making only 5 of 16 charity tosses.

Marion was led in scoring by Michalyn Mohr and Beth Knapp, who scored 11 points apiece. Knapp knocked down three 3-pointers.

Kristen Purdy led Solon with 19 points. She drained four 3-pointers.

Solon held a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans stretched their lead to 31-25 by halftime.

Solon put the game away with 23 points in the third quarter for a 54-39 margin. Rylee Smith scored eight of her 11 points in the period.

Marion never got closer than the final margin in the fourth quarter.

MARION (50): Emi Banes 3 0-4 8, Micaela Combs 0 0-0 0, Amanda Sahm 3 1-3 8, Paige Perkins 3 3-3 9, Beth Knapp 4 0-0 11, Tessa Jordan 1 0-0 3, Michalyn Mohr 5 1-6 11. Totals 19 5-16 50.

Halftime - Solon 31, Marion 25. 3-point goals - Solon 6 (Purdy 4, Herdliska, Rickels), Marion 7 (Knapp 3, Banes 2, Sahm, Jordan).
