Jefferson thumps Ottumwa

Jefferson hosted Ottumwa in a Class 4A substate quarterfinal boys basketball game Monday night and came away with a decisive 79-57 victory.

The J-Hawks (12-10) came out aggressively and built a 19-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and eased to the victory from there.

“Offensively we moved the ball pretty well and we got some good looks,” said Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman.  “We aren’t used to building that kind of a lead; I got a little worried about keeping our intensity.

“We decided to man up to begin the second half to keep everybody focused. We trapped their wings and (Creighton) Robinson and (Jacob) Olson collected a few turnovers that resulted in points.”

Jefferson got great balance on the offensive end of the court.  Olson led the J-Hawks with 28 points and Robinson contributed 11.  They combined to connect on seven 3-point baskets.

"My shots were falling tonight,” said Olson.  “They weren’t getting on me so I just took advantage of what they gave.  A night that a lot of what you put up goes in is the best feeling in the world, and when they overguard me it opens things up for me to get the ball to everybody else.”

Ky Kramer and Layne Sullivan controlled the inside game, scoring 17 and 10 points, respectively.

“We moved the ball and got a lot of people involved in the offense,” said Kramer.  “They had two guys that we really had to focus on boxing out and that really helped us control the boards.”

Sophomore Carter Burnes led all scorers for Ottumwa (2-20) with 33 points.  The 6-foot-6 forward connected on six 3-point baskets and demonstrated an ability to drive as well.  Austin Walker also
finished in double figures for the Bulldogs with 13.

Jefferson next plays at Burlington (8-13) Friday night.

“Kramer and Robinson were the only two players with much experience when we started the year.  We have dealt with injury, illness, and inexperience and we’ve come a long way,” said Ordman.  "We’ll learn a lot about ourselves Friday.  We can play well and tough.  Now is the time to do it.”
