Balanced Marion boys sideline Anamosa

MOUNT VERNON - More often than not a team effort wins out against one great player.

That was the case Friday night as the Marion Indians used a balanced attacked to edge the Anamosa Raiders 55-50 in a Class 3A district final boys basketball game Friday night at Mount Vernon.

Marion (12-11) will face Davenport Assumption (17-6) at Clinton on Monday night in the substate final with a trip to state on the line.

The Indians shared the ball well against Anamosa (14-9) with six players scoring and three reaching double digits. Daly Quinn led Marion with 16 points. Quinn Cannoy tallied 15 and Isaac Frazier 10.

“We don’t care who scores,” Marion Coach Mike Manderscheid said. “We focus on defense and get after it.”

If the balance was the key on the offensive end, the key defensively was to slow down Raiders leading scorer Spencer Barnes.

The Indians held Barnes to nine points, 10 points under his season average. Trevor Hardman had the task of slowing Barnes down, but because of early foul trouble it became a team effort.

“Hardman does a great job. He has good size and is very athletic,” Manderscheid said. “He and everyone else did a great job making Barnes take tough shots.”

The team effort on both ends of the floor paid off big as the Indians were able to survive the back and forth battle.

After a first half that saw multiple lead changes, the Raiders were able to push ahead for a 26-23 lead at the intermission.

The third quarter was the turning point for the Indians. They heated up from deep against the Raiders zone defense, hitting four 3-pointers, and outscored Anamosa 19-10 in the quarter to take a six-point lead into the final eight minutes.

“We knew we had to (make some threes),” Manderscheid said. “It was important to have a variety of shooters on the perimeter making shots and Quinn Cannoy did a nice job hitting elbow jump shots.”

From there the Indians never trailed. They fought off a couple surges from the Raiders and hit 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

MARION (55): Jeremy Schnieders 2 0-0 4, Quinn Cannoy 6 2-22 15, Daly Quinn 5 4-5 16, Craig Engle 1 0-0 3, Brenden Landuyt 2 0-0 5, Trevor Hardman 0 0-0 0, Isaac Frazier 3 4-6 10. Team 19 10-13 55.
