J-Hawks shoot past Burlington

BURLINGTON - Burlington High School boys basketball coach Jeff Bloomer knew what to expect from Class 4A Substate 5 opponent Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

He expected the J-Hawks to show good guard play. They did.

He expected the J-Hawks to switch defenses. They did.

He expected them to spread the court. They did.

Maybe the only surprise was the way the basketball bounced off the rim.

As a result, Jefferson knocked off second-seeded Burlington, 59-37, in the substate semifinals at Johannsen Gymnasium Friday night. The J-Hawks (13-10) advance to Tuesday’s substate final against top-seeded Iowa City West (22-0) at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. West ousted Prairie, 74-30, Friday night.

“They spread the court so well and come in from different directions,” Bloomer said of the J-Hawks. “They shoot threes and of course there are long rebounds. We were covering all those areas,” but Jefferson controlled the rebounding. “We got better at the end of the first half.”

The J-Hawks never trailed. Burlington’s 6-foot-7 senior Justin Randall controlled the opening tip, but Jefferson’s Creighton Robinson stole the ball and passed to Ky Kramer, who opened the scoring with a 3-pointer.

Randall got two points back on a putback, but the J-Hawks scored the next six points and Burlington played catchup the rest of the way.

“We knew they had good guards,” Bloomer said. “We saw them Monday night and they could drive the ball and shoot the ball. Jacob Olson is tough to deal with. He gets in the lane and creates a lot of problems.”

Olson, a 5-11 junior, is Jefferson’s leading scorer, entering the game with a 15.7 average. Burlington kept him silent in the first quarter, but he ended that drought with a layup to open second-quarter scoring. Olson scored eight in the J-Hawks’ 16-9 run in the second quarter and he finished with a game-high 16 tallies.

“When they change defenses, of course you have to change your offense,” Bloomer said. “We got some good looks, but we didn’t make our shots. And they’d spread us out so much on defense that it creates problems with rebound angles.”

The Grayhounds had a few mini spurts, such as a 6-2 run in the second quarter and a 7-2 in the final period.

Kramer finished with 12 points for Jefferson and Layne Sullivan added 10.

Randall paced Burlington with 14 points and six rebounds. Brandon Mosena added eight points, including two treys. George Coursey had four points and five rebounds and Dominique Fleming came off the bench for four points in the final period.

The Grayhounds ended the season at 8-14.
