MYFA getting 2 new fields at Tuma

The Metro Youth Football Association reached an agreement with the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department Friday to build two new football fields at the Tuma Soccer Complex.

The MYFA will keep its three lighted fields at 1100 Ahearn Drive NE in Cedar Rapids, giving the program a total of five fields for games. The two new fields at the Tuma Complex will not be lighted.

The MYFA, in operation for more than 40 years, has been looking for additional fields as the program continues to grow.

"I think it's exciting," said Roger Gruwell, a vice president with the organization. "It gives us the opportunity to not only expand our league but expand our year-end tournament as well."

Gruwell estimated the MYFA's share of the expense for building the two new fields will be $80,000 to $85,000. He said the City of Cedar Rapids will pay for other costs, such as irrigation.

The Tuma Soccer Complex is a 110-acre site that's located alongside County Home Road, north of Cedar Rapids and Robins. There are 28 soccer fields at the complex, along with a concession stand, pavillion, restrooms and parking.

The two new football fields will be located on the northern-most part of the park. The fields will be constructed this spring and summer and should be ready this fall, according to Gruwell.

Gruwell said more than 2,000 youngsters in grades 1 through 6 participated in the MYFA programs in 2012. That included approximately 1,200 kids in flag football (grades 1 through 4) and more than 1,000 kids on 53 teams in tackle football (grades 4 through 6).

The program serves Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities.

Gruwell said the MYFA will be starting a 7-on-7 passing league this summer for players in the 5th through 10th grades.

Gruwell said the MYFA is looking for additional land for more fields, including in the Time Check Neighborhood in northwest Cedar Rapids.

Officials with the MYFA may be reached by calling 393-8696.
