Jenks wins 3 events for Lions

PDF

When you talk about the Linn-Mar girls track team, it doesn't take long for Stephanie Jenks' name to come up.

The sensational freshman has done it all this season for the Lions and it was more of the same at Thursday night's Class 4A state qualifying meet at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Jenks' track schedule has been intertwined with her talents as one of the nation's top triathletes. That has limited her appearances for the Lions. For this week and next, however, it is full-time track for Jenks.

She was a triple winner in the eight-team state qualifier Thursday, taking the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter runs. Jenks' effort led Linn-Mar to a second-place finish behind Iowa City High in the team race.

The Little Hawks used a superior advantage in the field events to finish with 151.33 points. The Lions ended with 139.33.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson won eight events, including five relays, and scored 122.33 points.

All event winners and runners-up in each of the six state qualifying meets earn automatic spots at state. The next 12 best performances from the six meets also earn state berths. Weather postponed meets at Dubuque and North Scott, so the final list of qualifiers won't be known until those meets are run.

Jenks did not post the eye-popping times she posted at the Drake Relays, but the freshman did what was necessary to make the state meet.

"I had three events tonight," she said. "I had a pretty good idea that I could qualify (in the 3000) if I just ran under control."

Jenks posted times of 10:21.03 in the 3000, 4:45.29 in the 1500 and 2:15.46 in the 800, holding off teammate Amber Decker in the shorter race.

"That was my goal tonight," Jenks said. "All of the efforts were concentrated at getting to the state meets.

"This was the heaviest load I have ever run in one meet. Usually it has been two events and they are usually spaced out."

Linn-Mar Coach Nathan Hopp knows Jenks is a unique athlete.

"Stephanie, she is a special athlete," he said. "With her training for triathlons, it gives her such an advantage. She came out, she ran well and she did what she needed to do to get to state."

Decker and freshman Brooke Lorenz (long jump) secured state berths with runner-up finishes, as did the 4x400 relay team.

Hopp believes once all the results are tabulated many more Linn-Mar athletes will be among the qualifiers.

"It's going to be hard to say what all we got in, but based on our projections we're going to be taking a lot of kids to Des Moines," he said. "That was one of our goals entering the season, to take as many kids to Des Moines as possible along with scoring as many points at state as possible."

Another team that will be taking plenty of athletes to Des Moines is Jefferson, led by a pair of stellar seniors. Rachel Broghammer was a part of four winning relays in the 4x200, sprint medley, 4x100 and 4x400. She ran the last two relays with only about 15 minutes of rest in between the events.

Maliya Rattliffe was on three winning quartets in the 4x200, sprint medley and 4x100 for the J-Hawks. Jefferson also had three individual winners with Lucy Schneekloth in the 200, Madison Ranschau in the 100 hurdles and Emma Edelen in the discus.

The J-Hawks also qualified a sixth relay, taking second in the distance medley behind Cedar Rapids Washington. The Warriors' Kadejah Sanders captured the 100.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy took top honors in the 4x800 relay.
