DUBUQUE - Xavier parlayed a pair of third-place finishes into a Class 1A district tennis championship Friday at Wahlert High School.

Bill Young finished third in singles and the doubles team of Kyle D'Mello and Mitch Steffensmeier also placed third for the Saints. Grant Hunt was fourth in singles and the doubles team of Ben Curley and Zach Schowalter also finished fourth.

The Marion doubles team of Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson finished second and qualified for the singles & doubles state tournament May 24-25 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Xavier did not qualify any players to the singles & doubles tournament. The Saints advance to the substate team tournament next weekend.

Wahlert's Brandon Schneider and Tom Runde finished first and second, respectively, in singles.

Davenport Assumption's Nicknish and Huiskamp won doubles.

Assumption finished second and Wahlert third.
