Saints, Warriors trade 3-2 wins

The Xavier Saints and Washington Warriors met in the championship game of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament less than two weeks ago and it was an 11-1 mismatch in Xavier's favor.

The rematch Monday night was as tight as it gets as the clubs traded 3-2 victories in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Washington.

Logan Clarahan’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Bryce Grimm in the top of the eighth inning gave Xavier a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Clarahan had two of Xavier’s six hits while Reggie Schulte, Eric Schemmel and Mitch Keller combined to throw a one-hitter.

“I had two strikes and I just knew I was going to get a curveball so I just went with it,” said Clarahan. “My mindset was to just get the run in.”

Runs were hard to come by for the Saints, who stranded 24 runners in the doubleheader.

“You can’t leave that many people on by accident,” said Xavier Coach Dave Schemmel. “We have kids who are trying to do too much and just need to relax and play.”

Keller secured the win in the nightcap with a strikeout with the bases loaded. He took the loss in the opener.

“In the first game we didn’t play our best,” said Keller. “The second game was a new story, we got the key hit we needed and I got the strikeout when I had to have an out.”

Matt Troendle got the lone Washington hit in the second game. He drove in the game-winning run in the opener with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

“I thought it was going to be a hit,” said Troendle. “To drive in the winning run with a sacrifice seems like a quiet way to do it, but it’s still the winning run.”

Washington freshman Johnny Dobbs was the offensive story in the opener. He scored two runs, including the game-winner, and drove in the other Warrior run with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

“Noah Burdt doubled right before I got up and I was anxious to drive him in. I didn’t realize that I had hit the ball hard enough for it to carry past the left fielder,” said Dobbs. “We got a big win in that first game.”

Xavier senior Corbin Woods and Washington senior A.J. Puk both pitched five innings in the opener and were relieved in the sixth by Keller and Burdt, respectively. Burdt picked up the win.

“I was really ready and wanted to get on the mound tonight,” said Burdt. “I got a save on Friday and was fresh to help again tonight.

“We are getting better with each game,” said Washington Coach Tony Lombardi. “We really made some big plays on defense tonight and we have been getting pretty decent pitching and timely hitting. This is a nice club.”

Xavier (6-3, 2-2) plays at Benton Community Tuesday and visits Iowa City West on Friday.

Washington (5-2, 4-1) has a makeup date at City High Tuesday, hosts Bettendorf Wednesday and travels to Dubuque Hempstead Friday.
