Breitbach hits for cycle as Saints sweep

PDF

When your last name is Breitbach and you play sports at Xavier High School, people know who you are.

That's perfectly okay with Morgan Breitbach, a member of the Xavier softball team and also a member of the Class 4A state championship basketball team this year.

Dick Breitbach Sr., her grandfather and the patriach of Xavier and Regis athletics, sat in the front row behind home plate Tuesday night when the Saints faced Waterloo West in a doubleheader.

Her grandmother, Kitty, sat next to Dick in the front row. Alongside were her parents, Dick Breitbach Jr. and Jill.

Morgan treated her family to a show.

Breitbach hit for the cycle as the Saints swept the Wahawks, 11-2 and 10-0 in five innings, at Bob Erusha Field.

She likes seeing her grandfather at her games.

"It doesn't put pressure on me at all," she said. "He makes it to a lot of games. So does my grandma.

"It's kind of nice to have that support. It gives me more confidence."

Breitbach went 2-for-3 in the first game with a bunt single and double. She went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with a three-run triple and a three-run homer to finish the day 4-for-6 with six RBIs.

Technically, a batter is supposed to hit for the cycle in a single game, but it's still a fine accomplishment.

"Kind of cool," she said.

Breitbach needed those hits. She began the day with a batting average of only .176, according to the IGHSAU website, so those four hits really helped.

"I've just been in a really long slump," she said. "I'm trying to get out of it."

Breitbach said the Saints had a good defensive workout Tuesday morning, then followed with a good hitting session before the game. That helped her get ready for Waterloo West.

"I came into it with more confidence than I usually do," she said. "I went in with confidence and was able to capitalize."

Xavier Coach Nikki Price said Breitbach has suffered some tough luck in games this season.

"Morgan's average is not where it could be or should be," said Price. "She hits the ball hard when she makes contact. Defensively, she's had some players make good plays against her. And the stats don't show that.

"Her hits are going to start falling, just like they did tonight," said Price. "She's quick out of the box and can do a little bit of everything."

The Saints raised their records to 15-5 overall and 12-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. They have a busy week with doubleheaders at Burlington Wednesday and home against Prairie Thursday, followed by the Linn-Mar tournament this weekend.

"We've got a lot of games this week. Pretty big games," said Breitbach. "We've been on a good winning streak. I hope we can keep it going."

The Saints have won 10 straight after a 5-and-5 start.

Hayley Deutmeyer drove in three runs for Xavier in the first game. Allison Schwach had two hits and Erin Drahozal had a two-run double. Drahozal pitched a complete game for the victory.

Jacey Wiebold tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game. Schwach had two more hits in the leadoff spot and scored two runs. Erica Miller, who caught both games, had two hits.

Waterloo West fell to 7-13 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
