Saints pound Wahawks twice

PDF

Xavier hosted Waterloo West in a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader Friday night and it was no contest.

Twice.

The Saints posted 25 runs on 24 hits and took two five inning games from the Wahawks, 15-4 and 11-1.

Xavier’s sweep puts them at 19-9 overall and 12-6 in the MVC. That, coupled with a pair of losses by Prairie Friday night, unofficially moved the Saints into the No.1 seed for Substate No.3 when the tournament begins July 19.

The Saints also drew into a virtual tie atop the Valley Division with Prairie and Linn-Mar.

Adam Pick led the offensive assault with two hits in each game. A two-run home run in Game 1 and a bases-clearing double in Game 2 accounted for five of his seven RBIs.

“I have been taking a lot of extra batting practice and tinkering with my fundamentals,” said Pick.  “It’s paying off.  I got a low inside pitch that I was able to drive for the homer, and got a pitch up that I hit into the left-center field gap for the bases-loaded double.”

Luke Hammerberg contributed four hits as well. He had a double in each game and drove in three runs.

“We are learning that to be a good hitter we need to be disciplined,” said Hammerberg.  “I am seeing the ball very well right now and it is giving me a lot of confidence.”

Mitch Keller drilled a two-run homer in the seven-run third inning of the opener and ended up with three hits for the night.

“Against this kind of pitching, you kind of have to think about going away,” said Keller.  “But I got a fastball knee-high and just sort of golfed it out.”

Corbin Woods twirled a neat two-hitter in the nightcap. Perfect through two outs in the fourth inning, he gave up a double to Zack Fricke followed by an RBI single by Matt Ohrt and that was it for the Waterloo offense.  Woods struck out seven to go with no walks.

“No, it wasn’t something that I was thinking about,” Woods said of a possible perfect game. “When you have an 11-run lead all you think about is getting ahead of the hitters and getting outs.  Ben (Helms) called a great game tonight and we really mixed up my pitches.”

Eric Schemmel went the distance in the opener, scattering eight hits while striking out four.

“They just didn’t have much pitching tonight, but we still had to stay focused and play hard,” said Xavier Coach Dave Schemmel.  “We are hitting better, but we still have plenty of room to grow.

"These are the kinds of games that help us identify who will be able to help us in substitution situations come tournament time.”

Ohrt and Lincoln Conrey each collected two hits for Waterloo (6-21, 3-15).

Xavier travels down 42nd Street Monday to take on Kennedy in a key conference showdown.
