Zach Johnson 2nd at Deere

SILVIS, Ill. - Zach Johnson made it into a playoff for the John Deere Classic championship Sunday at the TPC at Deere Run.

But teenager Jordan Spieth spoiled Johnson's bid for a second straight title.

Spieth made a par on the fifth playoff hole to become the first teenager to win a PGA Tour event in 82 years.

Johnson, the defending John Deere Classic champion, tied with David Hearn for second place.

Spieth, 19, holed out on No.18 to finish his final round with a 65 and 19-under par overall for the four-day event.

Johnson held a one-shot lead after his birdie at No.17, but found the rough on 18 and finished with a bogey and a 68 to drop into a tie with Spieth.

Johnson had several opportunities to win in the playoff. His birdie chip on the first hole rattled the flagstick and flipped one foot away. He missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the second hole, and a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole. His second shot on the fifth playoff hole found the water hazard and he finished with a bogey.

Johnson will play in the British Open this week at Muirfield golf course in Scotland. Play begins Thursday.

Johnson is a graduate of Cedar Rapids Regis High School. His Zach Johnson Foundation tournament, a one-day event, will be held July 29 at Elmcrest Country Club.
