Indians struggle in loss to Assumption

SOLON - The Marion Indians picked a bad time to play one of their worst baseball games of the season.

Marion committed five errors and ace lefthander Levi Lochner was touched for 11 hits as the Indians lost to Davenport Assumption, 8-2, in the opening round of the Class 3A district tournament at Solon Friday night.

Marion finished the season with an 18-19 record.

"We can't make five errors like we did," said Marion Coach Steve Fish. "We didn't execute when we needed to execute."

Davenport Assumption will face West Delaware in the district finals Monday night at Solon.

Davenport Assumption (22-15) entered the game on a six-game losing streak, but the Knights got a strong pitching performance from Andrew Quested and swung from their heels against Lochner.

Lochner (7-2) had given up only 16 hits and five earned runs all season in 53 innings, but he had trouble throwing his patented curveball for strikes and gave Assumption too many fat fastballs to hit.

"Levi wasn't as sharp as he usually is," said Fish.

Only half of Assumption's eight runs were earned, thanks to Marion's five errors.

Trev Biery hit two doubles for Marion, but the rest of the lineup managed only three other hits. Biery and Alex Charipar had back-to-back doubles in the top of the first inning as the Indians took a brief 1-0 lead, but the rest of the night belonged to the Knights.

Assumption scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning with two singles and two doubles for a 3-1 lead. Marion made it 3-2 in the top of the third, but the Knights scored three more runs in the bottom of the third for a 6-2 bulge.

"Once we gave up six runs I knew we were in trouble," said Fish. "That's not a bad little team."

Davenport Assumption has won eight state titles in school history, with the most recent title coming in 2008.
