FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Cedar Rapids Kernels used two big innings to take the series finale from the Fort Wayne Tincaps by the score of 11-4 at Parkview Field on Monday night.

The Kernels scored five runs in the third inning, and added three more runs in the sixth.

Adam Brett Walker went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs and Mike Gonzales was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The home run was Walker’s 22nd of the season and he raised his RBI total to 88.

Jorge Polanco went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Max Kepler was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Kernels starter Jose Berrios (6-5) picked up the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and striking out four over six innings. Tim Shibuya, Alex Muren and Dallas Gallant each worked an inning of relief out of the Kernels bullpen.

Fort Wayne starter Walker Weickel (3-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits over three innings.

The Kernels outhit Fort Wayne, 14-10.

The Kernels have a day off Tuesday. They open a six-game homestand at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Christian Powell (2-3, 6.14) starts for the Kernels against Kyle Helisek (7-4, 3.03) for Peoria.
