Brewer retires from Kernels

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that right-handed pitcher Brian Gilbert will join the Kernels from Elizabethton and that Caleb Brewer has announced his voluntary retirement. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.

The Twins selected Gilbert in the seventh round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Seton Hall University where he posted a 4-4 record and 2.40 ERA in 27 appearances (one start) with six save. He has made five relief appearances for Elizabethton with a 1-0 record 0.00 ERA and one save, allowing a hit, walking one and striking out seven over six innings.

Brewer appeared in 12 games for the Kernels with a 1-1 record, 5.95 ERA and one save. In 20 2/3 innings he allowed 28 hits and 17 runs (15 earned) with 10 walks and 18 strikeouts. He was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent on June 4 after being released from the Atlanta Braves organization.

 

The Kernels begin a six-game homestand on Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs at 6:35 p.m. It’s a Free Money Wednesday. The Kernels are giving away $1,000 at the main gates with the top cash prize $100. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

 

The homestand continues through Monday.
