AMES - Cedar Rapids Kennedy product Dane Worley continued his strong summer of golf with a runner-up finish Sunday in the 111th Iowa Amateur.

Worley held the lead after the first two rounds at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames but fell one stroke short of champion Gene Elliott of West Des Moines.

Worley, who will be at junior at Drake University, shot rounds of 66-71-74 for a 54-hole total of 211.

Earlier this summer, Worley finished second in the Waterloo Open after rounds of 69, 67 and 70. Ricky Hearden shot a final-round 67 to overtake Worley by two strokes.

Worley, who had an 11th place finish at the Iowa Masters in mid-July, currently sits in seventh place in the Iowa Golf Association Player of the Year standings. The lead is held by Iowa senior-to-be Steven Ihm.

Worley’s family belongs to Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. On July 8, he had an opportunity to play a round with nine-time PGA Tour champion Zach Johnson, also a member at Elmcrest. Johnson shot 65 that day, Worley 66.

Later that week, Johnson finished second in the John Deere Classic after a three-way, five-hole playoff. He followed that with a sixth-place showing at the British Open.
