Berutti wins national trapshooting title

PDF

Carly Berutti has turned her love of hunting and the outdoors into a national title.

Berutti captured first place at the AIM Grand National Trapshooting Championships in the Junior Female Division Tuesday with a flawless performance on the final day of competition in Sparta, Ill.

Berutti, 17, was tied for fourth place after Day 1 after hitting 97 of 100 targets, but she nailed 100 in a row Tuesday to win the crown with the best showing of her life.

Berutti, a senior at Xavier High School, had never hit more than 71 straight, but she managed to keep a steady hand by listening to music through her ear plugs. She kept firing away and kept hitting the targets as the streak neared the century mark.

"I was trying to just focus on the music and not think about it," she said Saturday. "I was trying to make myself stay calm by focusing on the music."

Berutti finished the two-day event by hitting 197 of 200. The runnerup also hit 197 of 200, but Berutti won the title on a count-back.

"I feel great and honored to win that," she said. "There are many, many good shooters. They're amazing. To finally compete against them and beat them was an honor."

Berutti had a good day in the opening round by shooting 24-for-25, 25-for-25, 23-for-25 and 25-for-25. She had a fantastic day Tuesday by going 25-for-25 four times in a row, with five-minute breaks between each set of 25.

"It was one of the most amazing feelings," she said. "That was one of my goals, to hit 100 straight. To finally reach that after 3 1/2 years is amazing."

Berutti said there were more than 100 shooters from the United States, Canada and Australia in the Junior Female Division, which was for girls 15 to 18.

Berutti joined the trapshooting club at Xavier as a freshman and quickly developed into one of the top shooters in Iowa. She won the state title in Cedar Falls this June and was named captain of the all-state team.

Berutti is a member of the National Honor Society at Xavier with a 3.7 GPA, holds a Black Belt in karate, worked this summer as a counselor at Camp Wapsi, and works at the Otter Creek Sportsman Club and Hy-Vee the rest of the year.

She plans to attend Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., next year and join the school's national championship trapshooting team on scholarship. "I really hope that happens, so we'll see," she said.

Berutti's coaches are Bob Doerres, an AIM coach from Muscatine, and R.G. Prucha and Gene Parker on the Xavier team. She credits them with playing an important role in her success.

Berutti will attend the U.S. Olympic Trapshooting Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a week later this month to train with some of the best shooters in the country.

"My goal, in the long run, is to be on the Olympic team," she said. "If I don't make it this time, I want to make the next one. That is one of my long-term goals."

There will be trapshooting competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

This has been quite a year for the Berutti triplets of Cedar Rapids. Carly's sister, Marisa, helped Xavier win another state soccer title in June. Her brother, Gino, was a member of the Xavier football team that reached the state championship game last November. Their parents are Theresia and Joe Berutti.

Berutti loves to spend time in the great outdoors with her father. "I always go hunting with my dad," she said. "It's one of my favorite things to do."

Berutti has bagged a couple of deer while hunting with her father over the years. Now she's bagged a national title.
