Lombardi family leaves for WDM Valley

PDF

The fallout from the Tony Lombardi saga at Cedar Rapids Washington has taken a new twist.

The entire Lombardi family - Tony, Kari and their five children - have left Cedar Rapids and plan to live in the West Des Moines Valley school district, Washington athletic director Paul James said Monday morning.

Tony Lombardi has been charged with four counts of ethical violations as a teacher and coach at Washington. He faces a state hearing before an Administrative Law Judge on Sept. 23-24 in Des Moines.

Kari Lombardi has resigned as the head volleyball coach at Washington. Tony Lombardi resigned as the head football coach and baseball coach at Washington in May, but remained as the baseball coach through the end of the season in July.

Rocky Lombardi, their oldest child and a high school freshman, was supposed to compete for the starting quarterback job with the Washington varsity this year.

Amy Faulkner, one of Washington's assistant volleyball coaches, has been named the new head coach for the Warriors. Practice began Monday.

James said Friday that he expected Kari Lombardi to be Washington's volleyball coach this season and that he expected Rocky Lombardi to be a member of the football team. James mentioned Rocky Lombardi as a candidate for the quarterback job during an interview on KGYM Saturday morning, but that all changed.

"Tony has accepted a position outside of teaching in the business world," James said Monday. "The kids are going to be going to the Valley of West Des Moines schools. They're looking to get settled over there so they can get the kids in school on Tuesday the 20th (of August).

"We didn't really get much wind of it until very late in the week," said James. "She talked to Dr. Plagman (Washington principal Ralph Plagman) yesterday."

Tony Lombardi has been investigated by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners since June of 2012 on ethics complaints filed on behalf of Washington High School parents. Lombardi was notified in a letter dated Aug. 1, 2013 that he has been charged with four counts.

State investigations by the BoEE continue to conclusion regardless if the teacher and coach resign their positions, according to Duane T. Magee, the Executive Director of the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.

Tony Lombardi and Kari Lombardi could not be reached for comment Monday morning.
