Koberg paces Cougars to CRANDIC title

PDF

The Kennedy golf team has split vision these days.

The Cougars are keeping one eye on the courses they keep conquering and one eye on the calendar.

The Cougars captured another title Monday when they won the CRANDIC championship in the searing heat at the Gardner Golf Course, but they can't help thinking about the district meet Oct. 8 and the state meet Oct. 11-12.

"I think our total focus is on districts and state. I think that's when we're trying to peak," Kennedy junior Conner Koberg said after taking medalist honors with a par-72. "These meets matter, but they don't matter as much until October. That's when you really want to play well, more under pressure."

Kennedy placed second at the state meet last year, finishing just one shot behind Waukee. The Cougars will be aiming for No.1 this time around.

"I think we have a chance at state but obviously we're going to have to play really good golf, because all those Des Moines schools and all the Cedar Rapids schools and everywhere else in the state are wanting the same outcome as we do," said Koberg. "We all want it really bad."

Koberg collected a two-shot victory Monday with his steady round that included four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys. Davis Sutton of Kennedy, Jake Patterson of Washington and Kellen Gray of Xavier shared second placed at 2-over 74.

"I hit it really well today, but I didn't putt as well as I would have liked," said Koberg, who counted 33 putts in his round. "I just had some trouble reading the greens, so I lost some shots. The bogeys were kind of stupid."

Koberg was encouraged by his overall play, from tee to green. "It's really encouraging," he said. "I hit a lot of drives really well. My iron shots were good, for most of the day."

Seth Nutt shot a 4-over 76 for Kennedy and Ross Grekoff had a 5-over 77 to complete their team scoring. Cole Murdock and Tanner Stewart shot 79's for the deep Cougars, but their scores were not needed.

The Washington Warriors enjoyed their best day of the season and finished a strong second in the team standings at 305, just six strokes behind Kennedy.  Patterson led Washington with his 74 to share runner-up honors. Evan Jankwietz fired a 75 for the Warriors, Dominic Rodriguez finished with a 78 for Washington and Frank Lindwall had a 78.

Gray helped Xavier finish third in the eight-team standings with his 74. Brent Larson shot a 5-over 77 to help Linn-Mar take fourth place. Mitch Willems shot a 77 to help Jefferson place sixth.
