Jenks suffers spill at World Triathlon

LONDON - Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks will return from England next week with some bumps and bruises.

Jenks fell in slippery conditions during the biking portion of the Junior World Triathlon Championships in London Thursday morning and finished 47th in the Junior Elite Women's division.

"Definitely not the race I wanted," Jenks said in an e-mail from London. "I had an awesome start for the swim. I was able to come out of the swim better than I had all season and found myself in the top three of the first chase pack on the bike.

"Going into the first 180 turn of the race I slid out due to the wet conditions. First crash all year. I got right up. My chain was jammed and it took me several minutes to get back into the race.

"Again definitely not the race I was planning for but it was a great experience nonetheless. All in all I had no broken bones but lots of road rash and a gash. Bike got some road rash, too.

"It's been pretty cool," said Jenks. "Former Olympian Gwen Jorgenson came to my room the night before the race and gave me one of her old bike jerseys."

Jenks was timed in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 17 seconds. Tamara Gorman of the United States won the event in 57:08.

Jenks plans to return home Monday.
