Marion High School will induct eight new members into its Athlete Hall of Fame Friday prior to the homecoming football game against Benton Community at Thomas Park.

The five athletes who will be inducted are Garth Hunter (1934), Russ Seeks (1952), Bob Hoglund (1963), Whitney Perkins (2005) and Matt Holland (2006).

Lori Dostal will enter the Hall of Fame as a coach. Bob Hoyt and Doug Hutchins will be inducted as community members.

Hunter participated in football, basketball and track at Marion. He was a talented running back who still ranks among the all-time school leaders in touchdowns, nearly 80 years after he graduated. He was named third team all-state as a junior when the Indians went 8-1 and won the Tri-Valley Conference title, and as a senior he led Marion to an 8-0-1 record.

Seeks starred in football, basketball and track for Marion. He helped the Indians win the conference football title as a senior and received honorable mention all-state. He was also honorable mention all-state in basketball as a senior when Marion went 24-2 and reached the quarterfinals of the one-class state tournament. He won three events at the Wamac Conference track meet as a senior.

Hoglund earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He finished his basketball career with 858 points and scored 39 in a game against Anamosa. He helped the Indians win Wamac Conference titles as a sophomore and junior. Hoglund led the football team in scoring his junior and senior years. And in track, he won the Wamac title in the 120-yard high hurdles as a junior.

Holland was a standout baseball player at Marion. He was a two-time all-state selection and led Marion to the state tournament for the first time in school history in 2006. He was named a third team All-American at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 22nd round in 2011.

Perkins earned 16 varsity letters in four sports during her career at Marion. She earned all-state honors in softball for five straight years and played every inning of every game. She still holds the school record for runs scored in a season. Perkins earned all-Wamac honors in volleyball and basketball. She also qualified for the state track meet on the 4x100 relay. She played softball at Iowa State for two years.

Dostal has been a physical education and health education teacher at Marion High School since 1984. She won 331 games as the volleyball coach from 1984-2002 and won numerous Coach of the Year honors. Dostal also served as an assistant track coach (1984-1992) and coached club volleyball for CeMar and the Marion Magic (1992-2008). Dostal played soccer and rugby at the University of Northern Iowa.

Hoyt was an administrator in the Marion school district for 21 years, including associate principal at Marion High School (1987-1990) and the principal at Vernon Middle School (1990-2008). He began announcing events for the Marion district in 1990 and has announced every middle school track meet since 1991. He has announced Marion football games since 2002 and began announcing girls basketball games in 2005, all on a voluntary basis. Hoyt was named the Iowa High School Public Address Announcer of the Year in 2006 by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers.

Hutchins, a 1946 Marion graduate, has helped Marion athletes in a variety of ways over the years. He used his truck to haul football equipment and uniforms to away games so players could change in the locker room. He was a scorekeeper at basketball games and a member of the chain crew for football. Along with John Fowler, Hutchins organized the first Little League program in Marion and served as director for 25 years. He also served on the Marion School Board for many years, including a term as president.
