RoughRiders 'dance' by Youngstown, 4-3

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders did a little dancing Friday after they earned their first home win of the season, 4-3, over Youngstown at The Stable in Cedar Rapids.

Andrew Poturalski hit the game-winner with 1 minute and 14 seconds left to the delight of the home crowd, and the RoughRiders celebrated afterward with their victory song, "23", by pop star Miley Cyrus.

"It's our team win song we all decided on," Poturalski said.

Miley Cyrus?

"We all like it," he said.

If a hockey team wants to jam to a song about Michael Jordan, the most famous basketball player ever, who is going to argue if they get results like they did Friday?

It was the third time in three games the RoughRiders (2-1) have scored at least four goals.

"I think that was our main focus for the game," Andrew Oglevie said. "Get the puck in the net."

Cedar Rapids had six days to stew on its 5-4 loss to Sioux Falls in The Stable last weekend. The RoughRiders came out with an offensive edge and outshot the Phantoms, 10 to 2, in the first period.

Oglevie scored the first goal 14:05 into the game, finding the rebound in front of the net off a shot by Clark Kuster.

Early in the second period, the RoughRiders struck again, this time Poturalski had a seeing-eye pass ahead to Jason Kalinkowski, who shot it into the five-hole to put Cedar Rapids up 2-0.

"We skated well and showed a lot of speed," RoughRiders Coach Mark Carlson said. "At times our puck movement was real strong."

Youngstown (1-3) tied things up, 2-2, with goals by J.J. Piccinich and Maxim Letunov in the second period.

The Phantoms then had a power play late in the second period, but the line of Nate Widman, Judd Peterson, Ivan Provorov and Casey Jerry, backed by goalie Chris Birdsall, killed it without Youngstown gaining the lead or momentum.

"Our special teams were big, no doubt about that," Carlson said. "Overall our penalty kill was good."

Cedar Rapids took the lead again early in the third period on a wrap-around goal by Widman. It seemed that might be the game-winner, but Youngstown came back with a goal with 6:54 left on a well-placed shot by J.J. Piccinich over Birdsall's right shoulder.

After each team had a power play chance, the game seemed headed for overtime. But Poturalski hit a shot from about 25 feet out to get every cowbell in the arena ringing from a crowd of 1,636.

"I just got a chip off the wall, made a move to the middle and tried to get a shot on that," Poturalski said. "There was not much time left, so I was trying to get everything on it.

"When the puck went in the net, we all went nuts."

After that, the RoughRiders circled the defensive wagons and bled out the final minute of clock. It was a festive atmosphere after the game.

"I think it's a big win for us," Poturalski said. "For us to come up with that win is huge."

Carlson knows the season is a long one.

"It's one hockey game," he said. "We hung in there and played well for the majority of the game tonight."

The RoughRiders have a week off before returning to the ice on Saturday, Oct. 12 at home against Dubuque. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

"Its nice to get our first win at home," Oglevie said. "It was nice to get that win under our belt. I think our offense is really clicking."
