MSR Classic teams helping Salvation Army

Basketball players and cheerleaders from all eight Metro high schools will be serving as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army Red Kettle holiday fundraising campaign this Saturday, Nov. 16 at various locations in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

The activity is part of the Metro Sports Report Classic, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood campus and showcases all eight Metro boys basketball teams.

The Metro Sports Report Classic is part of the Hall of Pride Challenge, which features a combination of basketball events and community service projects. The Salvation Army is celetrating its 125th anniversary in Cedar Rapids in 2013 and is working with the Metro Sports Report on the MSR Classic.

The basketball players and cheerleaders will serve as bell-ringers from noon until 6 p.m. this Saturday in the Metro area.

"We are thrilled to be part of this event," said Lia Pontarelli, the Director of Development & Communications for the Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids. "To not only see the kids coming out and playing on the 30th, but to see them getting involved in the community with our Red Kettle campaign is very exciting.

"Having the eight groups out bell-ringing not only provides some friendly competition, but it will help us provide encouragement and support to those families struggling in our community."

The eight teams will be located at six Hy-Vee stores and two Fareway stores.

Here are the teams and their locations for this Saturday's Red Kettle campaign:

Xavier - Hiawatha Fareway
Kennedy - Edgewood Hy-Vee
Linn-Mar - Marion Fareway
Washington - 1st Avenue Hy-Vee
Cedar Valley Christian - Mount Vernon Road Hy-Vee
Prairie - Wilson Avenue Hy-Vee
Jefferson - Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee
Marion - Marion Hy-Vee

In addition to their bell-ringing activities, all eight teams will be donating holiday gifts for deserving children through the Salvation Army. The gifts will be presented to the Salvation Army at the MSR Classic Nov.30 at Kirkwood.
