Coppock wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar senior Kiley Coppock is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Coppock helped the Linn-Mar volleyball team compile a 23-15 record this season. She led all Class 5A players in digs by a considerable margin with 749, an average of 7.97 digs per set.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Kiley Coppock:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

KILEY: There is not one specific favorite individual highlight that comes to mind. Being able to be a part of the Linn-Mar volleyball program throughout high school has been an amazing experience. This year especially with Coach Kehe has been my personal favorite year. I was so honored to work with such a talented coach this past year. It is something I will never forget.

MSR: What is your favorite team highlight in sports?

KILEY: My favorite team highlight would have to be this year during a Saturday tournament at Washington High School. I think everyone on my team can agree that we really showed up to play. We knocked off West Delaware in the first match, which at the time was ranked No.3 in 4A; then beat Mount Vernon, ranked No.6 in 3A at the time in the quarterfinal; and faced Dike-New Hartford in the semifinals.

In that semifinal match, our team took the Dike-New Hartford powerhouse and the team ranked eighth in the NATION to a third set. We were only the second team in Iowa to ever take a set off of them. That feeling, our energy that whole day is something I will always remember.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

KILEY: My family and friends are the greatest support system, but one particular person who has influenced my sports career has been my dad. He has been there for me with every sport I've ever tried since I was about 4 years old. He has encouraged me to do my best, taught me how to care for a whole team instead of just my personal success, and has always made sure I've had fun doing it.

In fact, before every match or tournament this year, the last thing he always said to me before I walked out the door was "Remember, have fun!" I would not be the athlete I am today without him, so thank you dad.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

KILEY: As of now, I am undecided on my future college plans involving sports. I am definitely keeping my options open!

MSR: What are your favorite classes?

KILEY: My favorite classes are the classes where I can write. I have loved all of my English classes, especially creative writing and journalism!

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

KILEY: My favorite community service project I did was with my mom. We took part in "Meals on Wheels" and delivered meals to those who were in need. It was a great experience!
