Kennedy powers past Central girls

A balanced offensive attack dominated by the inside play of Morgan Martin and Stephanie Botkin powered Kennedy to a 67-38 victory over Davenport Central Tuesday night at Kennedy.

Martin scored 14 points and Botkin added 13. They controlled the lane at both ends of the court.

Jordan Holmes contributed 12 points and Paige Hendrickson chipped in with 11 to give the Cougars (1-0) four players in double figures.

“I was very pleased with our offense tonight,” said Kennedy Coach Tony Vis.  “We came out of the gate being ready and playing with energy.  That was good to see.  It is something that we can build on and stretch it into a full 32 minutes.”

Martin, coming off knee surgery that prevented her participation most of last season, played with great confidence.  She led the way at the wing on Kennedy’s full-court press and partnered with Botkin for high-low action in the half-court offense.

“I was able to play AAU ball last summer and that helped me get ready for the season,” said Martin.  "I really like being active playing the wing on our press working with Paige to trap the ball and when Stephanie and I work the high-low post together, we really open things up for each other.”

“It was really great to have Morgan back and playing again,” said Botkin.  “When defenses collapse on us we can get the ball to the outside and know that they can score.  When they hit their shots, it opens up the inside for us.  That makes it pretty tough to stop us. We seem to have great chemistry and it will only get better.”

Kennedy hosts Cedar Falls next Tuesday to open the conference season.
