Warriors overwhelm Huskies at MSR event

Cedar Valley Christian may have given the Washington Warriors a good game last year when the Huskies had five seniors in their starting lineup and the Warriors were coming off a winless campaign with a brand-new coach.

Not this year, however. Heavens no.

Washington blitzed the young Huskies, 91-7, in the final game of the Metro Sports Report.com Classic at Johnson Hall Saturday.

The Warriors have a collection of good athletes and good shooters and look like a club that could have a fine season. The Huskies, by contrast, are starting basically from scratch after finishing 14-9 last year with a veteran squad.

The Pride Challenge event featured all eight Metro teams and the pairings were arranged geographically with Jefferson vs. Prairie, Linn-Mar vs. Marion, Kennedy vs. Xavier, and Washington vs. Cedar Valley Christian.

Cedar Valley Coach Jeff Pospisil knew his club would be sorely overmatched, yet was proud of his club's effort against their neighbors from Cottage Grove Avenue SE.

"I don't think they were humiliated," he said. "They knew they were outmatched and they still went out and tried. So you can't fault them for that."

Washington Coach Adam Sanchez used his starters for only short stretches and did not use his full-court press against the Huskies all night. The Warriors scored most of their points on easy layups after turnovers and by nailing 14 3-pointers.

Washington's top scorers did not even start the game. Jared Printy popped in three 3-pointers and netted 13 points and Keegan Moore also scored 13 as Sanchez used all 16 of his players.

Pospisil has modest goals for his team.

"Let's see if we can get over the fear, let's see if we can learn our stuff well enough so we can play basketball," he said. "And then we'll worry about being competitive after Christmas."
